The redesigned ninth-generation Honda Civic lineup 2012MY for America includes a sedan, a coupe, two sporty “Si” models, an “HF” high fuel economy, a Hybrid version and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant.

As far as engineering goes, Honda has done a good job with the new Civic range, specially with the Hf and Hybrid models which at 40 MPG average fuel consumption can take on the new Hyundai Elantra in the American market.

The styling revisions though have been far less successful. Specially the Hybrid version that you see above looks like it belongs to 1950s!

Anyhow, back to that fuel economy thing, the 2012 Civic HF features a 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine that manages 41 mpg. But the Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine so they expect it delivers at least 45 mpg. Both the Honda Civic HF and Civic Hybrid models will be equipped with aerodynamic components for improved efficiency and Honda ECO Assist™ technology, an innovation that can enhance efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback to promote more efficient individual driving styles.

Besides the eco-minded models, Honda also offers two sporty Si models with for both sedan and coupe models powered by a 2.4-liter engine rated at 200 horsepower with 170 ft-lb of torque. Connected to a new 6-speed manual transmission, this powertrain is said to average 31 mpg.

You might also want to go for the Civic GX Natural Gas models which will do 39 mpg but you have to be prepared for a little compromise on the performance.

“The Civic is the only model in the industry that can deliver on all fronts – fuel economy, sporty performance, smart packaging, alternative fuel and long-term value,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda Motor Co.,Inc. “For the ninth-generation Civic, we are emphasizing improved fuel economy across the board, from the hybrid sedan to the sporty Si model.”
