Along with the normal version of the new Volkswagen Golf Mk7, the German giant is also going to show the public a concept version of the new GTI at Paris Motor Show which opens its door for the press tomorrow. The GTI badge is worth its weight in gold, so everybody’s keen to see what VW has come up with for this new model.

Sadly, the early reports do not look good. First of all, the new Golf GTI is not exactly a looker. But that’s not its fault. It’s the Golf’s. Second, VW is still cautious with the GTI and is adamant it doesn’t need that much power to be stellar. So the new one is said to have 220 horsepower coming from, again, a turbocharged 2.0 liter four banger. They will offer you a performance pack which boosts that up to 230 hp and a fairly substantial 350 Nm of torque.

That is good power, but not compared to what GTI is going to face in this segment. It certainly isn’t fast enough with a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 6.6 seconds and top speed of barely 250 km/h.

All that said, with Golf GTI it’s always been about the nature of delivery and the feel of the thing. It is almost certainly going to excel at that this time around as well, but imagine how much better it would be if it had more power. VW probably doesn’t want it to mess with the market of Golf R.
