A concept version of Mercedes’ new small crossover will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April to preview the production version of new GLA-Class, set for debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Mercedes GLA is Daimler’s answer to the fast-growing compact crossover segment, and it will be based on the new A-Class platform, which is also the base for other cars such as the B-Class and the CLA. You can think of the GLA as a jacked-up A-Class with big wheels. It should be quite an appealing vehicle.

The GLA will be offered with both front- and four-wheel-drive, and boast the same engines as the A and CLA-Class. The range-topping version will get a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine with up to 200 horsepower, before a GLA 45 AMG comes along and top that with 360 horsepower.
