Dragon Racing Latest Team to Join Formula E

Dragon Racing Formula E Team 600x400 at Dragon Racing Latest Team to Join Formula E

Formula E Championship is getting stronger and stronger as more teams sign up for the first ever season starting from next year. The latest team to join the party is American Indy Car outfit Dragon Racing. Owned by media and publishing entrepreneur Jay Penske, Dragon Racing is a fan anything innovative. So they found the idea of racing electric-powered Formula cars rather intriguing.

Currently Dragon Racing fields two cars in the IndyCar Series with drivers Sebastian Saavedra and four-time Champ Car World Series champion Sébastien Bourdais. They sure know how to make proper racing cars. Making them run on electricity is a challenge that they think is worth taking up.

Even though electric powertrains are associated with pathetic green cars, they do make great racing machines. The reason for that is because an electric motor offers all its torque, which is usually quite enormous, from the get go, zero rpm. It results in awesome acceleration capabilities. They are also rather simple to build, and hugely reliable. It’s just the weight of the batteries and their limited range that are can be considered as drawbacks.

Dragon Racing joins Andretti Autosport, Drayson Racing and China Racing as one of the 10 teams to be put forward to the FIA for final approval by its World Motor Sport Council. We have already seen what electric race cars are capable of thanks to the efforts of Dryson. It’ll be interesting to see what other teams will come up with.

“It’s an honour for Dragon Racing to have been selected as one of the founding teams in Formula E,” said Jay Penske, Owner and President of Dragon Racing. “Formula E symbolizes a vision for the future of motorsports and the automotive industry, while directly appealing to a new generation of global race fans. Formula E offers a tremendous opportunity for our many technology and media partners, and we look forward to its inevitable growth and ascendancy over the next decade.”
