An online survey by Autoscout24 revealed that the most popular and sought after classic car in Europe and UK is in fact an American one. It is the iconic Ford Mustang that won 37 percent of the votes and beat ahead of the BMW M1 (20 per cent) and the Volkswagen Beetle (11 per cent).

Europe is a sports car continent, especially the UK, so you would expect that one of the countless brilliant sports cars and saloons made over there during the past 100 years should come on top. Turns out that is not the case, and most people prefer the simplicity, raw power, and the good looks of the muscle car.

That said, the Mustang has an unfair advantage, and that is its fame as a movie star. Because it is American, it had the chance to star in a number of great Hollywood creations and that gave it an status unmatched by any other vehicle in history.

Launched in 1964, Mustang became an instant sensation and inspired millions of people. With nearly 3,000 movie and TV appearances around the world, countless song references, parade appearances, toys and more, a passion for Mustang is common to car fans around the world. The history of Ford Mustang is being recounted in a new “Mustang Countdown” series of videos, celebrating the car’s 50th anniversary.

“Ford Mustang is more than a car, it’s the freedom of the open road and the spirit of performance driving,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “Mustang has been a fundamental part of global automotive culture for almost half a century and is one of the world’s most recognisable vehicles.”
