We have been told time and again that the next car McLaren will produce will be a Porsche 911 rival. Now though, the British company announced the car they are going to launch next, and it isn’t a sports car at all. What it is, is a full-on super car positioned between the 12C and the P1.

That makes the new car, called McLaren 650S, a Ferrari F12 sort of car; something that is more powerful and more dramatic than the 12C, but not as extravagant and expensive as the P1. McLaren of course remains tight-lipped on the details of the 650S, only saying that it is “the result of 50 years of competing, and winning, at the highest levels of motorsport,” and that it will be “the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement.”

Sounds intriguing, but the question that boggles our mind most of all is why McLaren is so rubbish with names. They’ve got a bit of money. They should hire someone with some imagination to name their cars for them.

McLaren 650S is set for debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which begins early next month.
