For Bugatti Veyron SuperSport to reach its ultimate top speed of 268 mph it needs a huge oval, a special key, and a very brave driver. But turns out you can get really close to that top speed on public roads, as proven by this Bugatti Veyron Pur Blanc – which is a one-off version of the SS – during the Sun Valley Road Rally in Idaho.

This super special Bugatti Veyron Pur Blanc, which was also the star of GoldRush 6, manages to hit 246.4 mph on a straight stretch of road. The road was closed, obviously, but even so, this is a remarkable achievement. The road is, after all, public, which means it has lots of bumps and imperfections, each of which a serious threat to the car’s stability at that kind of speed.

Bugatti Veyron Pur Blanc was commissioned by its American customer in 2012. The name means “pure white”, even though the car is two-tone white and carbon. It is based on the SuperSport version, which means it has the 1,200 horsepower quad-turbo W16 engine. This powertrain will probably go down in the history books as the mightiest internal combustion engine of all time. The replacement for the Veyron is going hybrid.
