Don’t worry, it’s not real. A conservative car maker like Mazda would never even think about creating such a thing. This Mazda MX-5 Cross is a rendering by independent designer  Theophilus Chin, just for fun!

Mazda MX-5 Cross design exercise tries to imagine what happens when you mix a sports car with a crossover. In theory, that sounds like a helluva recipe. You have the lightness and agility of the sports car, and the capabilities of the high-riding crossover which enables the vehicle to deal with all sorts of terrain. It’s be a like a Rallycross machine for the roads.

The problem is, there isn’t a situation in the real world where a car like Mazda MX-5 Cross would make any sense. It sits only two people and it is too small to be used as a real crossover, and the jacked-up suspension makes sure the car won’t behave like a sports car should. So it is neither here nor there. We suppose an extreme version of this car with a huge and hugely powerful engine would make a good rally car for an event like Rally Dakar or something. But short of that, this better remain a design exercise.
