Mazda is a car maker known for a lot of things such as value, quality, and a fun drive. What they are famous for is design prowess. But they are determined to change that, and to prove they are serious they have summoned the powers of KODO to design a bicycle and a sofa.

KODO, in case you don’t know, is Mazda’s latest design philosophy which is responsible for the looks all of their new products since 2010. It was hailed as a success when it was first introduced, but only because it put an end to the ‘smiley face’ era. In reality, it made all Mazda cars, with the exception of the new MX-5, look the same.

Now the designers have applied the principles of KODO to a bicycle and a sofa, and the results are somewhat better than the cars. The bike particularly looks pretty dope, what with its minimalist structure that is “composed of the least possible number of parts.” The chassis is made from a single sheet of steel hammered by hand, and it features black leather saddle and red stitching from the new MX-5. As for the KODO sofa, it is a collaborative effort between Mazda’s designers and Italian furniture makers and it is said to be inspired by the CX-3 crossover.

Mazda bicycle and sofa, along with KODOKI – a tsuiki copperware wine cooler – and SHIRAITO – a traditional lacquered box – are on display at “Mazda Design: The Car as Art” event in Milan.
