The latest member of VW’s GTE concept family is a sports sedan of sorts trying to offer a new take on the old but still popular four-door coupe recipe. It is called the Volkswagen C Coupe GTE and it would slot between the Passat and the Phaeton, if it were to go into production, which it isn’t for the time being.

Volkswagen C Coupe GTE is five meters long which means it boasts a spacious cabin and is fairly practical in spite of its coupe-like design. It is based on the new modular longitudinal matrix (MLB) and features a good deal of chrome on the outside, plus a set of 22-inch wheels.

As is often the case with VW concept cars, the interior design looks a lot like that of the production models, only wrapped in high-end material and equipped with advanced technology features. The C Coupe gets a 3D infotainment system, digital instruments, Damascus steel trim pieces, Blizzard Grey upholstery and warm wood accents.

In terms of the technicalities, and per usual, Volkswagen C Coupe GTE gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a four-cylinder TSI engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission into which the engineers have integrated an electric motor. The combined system output is 180 kW/245 PS and 369 pound-feet of torque which corresponds to the following figures: 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 8.6 seconds; top speed of 144 mph; combined fuel consumption of 2.3 l/100 km or 102 mpg; 55 g/km of CO2 emissions; up to 31 miles in zero emissions E-mode; and total range of more than 684 miles.
