This is more like it! We’ve been complaining that the Golf concepts VW has come up with for this year’s Wörthersee GTI meeting aren’t really that exciting, and now they have unveiled this. This is the VW Golf GTE Sport Concept and it’s totally and properly mad.

At first glance VW Golf GTE Sport Concept might remind you of old W12 Golf Concept as GTE’s sills and rocker panels are almost identical to that car. This one does not have a W12 engine. In fact it doesn’t even have a 2.0 liter like the standard Golf GTI. What it has is a 1.6 liter TSI engine out of a Polo WRC with 300 PS, coupled with two electric motors each developing 115 PS.

That means 430 PS is delivered to all four wheels via a 6-speed DCT transmission and it can catapult the GTE Sport from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 280 km/h. Meanwhile, the fuel consumption figure reads a very charming 2 liters per 100 km or more than 140 mpg. You even get 50 km of purely electric, zero-emission drive.

This, of course, is a concept powertrain put and will take a while to spawn a production version. But it eventually will. What doesn’t have any chance of becoming a reality is the design of the VW Golf GTE Sport with its carbon fiber panels and butterfly doors. We have to say though, as far as show cars go, this is a good one.
