One of the sweetest items on RM Sotheby’s Paris Retromobile auction list is a gorgeous 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing, which is the automotive equivalent of Elvis Presley, only it gets more attractive with age and never disappoints its fans. In fact, it keeps getting better and more awesome as it puts on the years.

The guys at RM Sotheby’s were cool enough to let a journalist from Evo magazine get behind the wheel of this precious Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing for a quick spin before they send it under the hammer. Needless to say, you do not want to miss this:

Just to recap a fun little fact about Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing: the engineers first came up with the gullwing doors as a way to get around a practical issue. It wasn’t a style choice, but rather a change made out of necessity, since the car’s tubular frame wouldn’t allow for normal doors. So they just went ahead and put the hinges on the roof. And like that one of the biggest design icons of the twentieth century was born.

This 300 SL is estimated at around £1 million.
