This rather unattractive hunk of metal you see here is now one of the most expensive car ever sold, although it has ways to go before it reaches the $50+ million GTO models. The 1957 Ferrari 335 S Scaglietti was auctioned at Artcurial Motorcars Retromobile event for a cool $35,711,359.

At that kind of price, you would expect this car to have tons of pedigree, and of course, it doesn’t disappoint. Originally sold as a play thing to Pennsylvania architect Robert N. Dusek in 1960, the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Scaglietti has changed hands many times during its lifetime and also accomplished a lot.

Some of the most notable achievements of this 335 include a sixth place finish at Sebring 12 Hours, a second place finish at the Mille Miglia, a victory at Cuba Grand Prix in 1958, and a speed record at Le Mans 24 Hour averaging a lap speed of over 200 km/h.

This 1957 Ferrari 335 S Scaglietti proves that the collector cars market is hotter than ever as the bidding started on this car at $22.3 million. It is considered such a safe investment that somebody finally ended up paying 35 million for it, knowing that next year the car will be worth 45.
