One of the most interesting concept cars at this year’s Geneva Motor Show comes all they way from China. It’s a “Turbine-Recharging Electric” from a firm called Techrules, and it’s claiming some big numbers which, if true, can turn the whole EV world on its head.

Techrules Turbine-Recharging Electric combines two known technologies for a new solution to the problems of range and efficiency in the electric cars. Using experiences learned in the aviation industry, Techrules has come up with a turbine-generator range-extender that tops off a battery pack which feeds the electric motors driving the wheels.

The running prototype Techrules concept supercar presented at Geneva boasts a peak power of 768 kW (1,030 bhp / 1,044 PS) which translates into a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds and top speed of 350 km/h. The most amazing number about this thing, however, is the range which is a mind-boggling over 2,000 km on an average fuel consumption of just 0.18 l/100 km (1,569 mpg).

We can’t wait to see if this whole idea is for real or not. The firm seems confident about it and is even planning to launch various city car models based on it. The range-extender in Techrules Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle (TREV) has a very clever way of generation electricity. Here’s a brief explanation of how it works:

Air drawn into the micro turbine is passed through a heat exchanger where heat from the exhaust air is transferred to the cold intake air after it has been compressed. Ignition of the compressed and heated fuel-air mixture generates enormous energy which is channelled to at very high speeds to turn the turbine vanes. As this hot exhaust gas is expelled, it passes through the heat exchanger to ensure the heat energy is recuperated and transferred to cold intake air.
