Mazda is having a surprisingly rich Los Angeles Auto Show lineup this year, including the new CX-5 crossover and a new endurance prototype race car. Dubbed Mazda RT24-P, the closed-cockpit single-seater is built to Daytona Prototype international (DPi) specs for Mazda Prototype factory race team, and it competes at IMSA series and 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Just like the production cars, Mazda RT24-P is designed with KODO principles of style and efficiency which explains the muscular appearance and the dynamic stance. Rocking the new Riley Mk. 30 chassis, the RT24 is powered by Mazda MZ-2.0T four-cylinder turbo with around 600 horsepower. So one thing’s clear: even if the RT ends up not winning any races the drivers are going to have a helluva good time racing with it!

“KODO design is at the heart of any vehicle that carries a Mazda badge, and that is very evident in the design of the 2017 Prototype,” said Ken Saward, senior manager of Design at Mazda Design Americas, which falls under the Mazda North American Operations umbrella. “We considered the two main parameters of designing a successful race car for this series: aerodynamic performance and the new-for-2017 technical regulations. Working with Multimatic’s aerodynamicist and engineers, we discovered that applying the KODO design philosophy to the surfaces and the silhouette of the car enabled us to create a dynamic, purposeful-looking design and a very aerodynamically efficient one.”
