In recent BMW has been trying to give the ‘Art’ in BMW Art Car real meaning by trusting the job of designing them to the likes of Jeff Koons and John Baldessari. Now they are experimenting with a new form of art – a sort of post, post modern, if you like – which is why they hired young Chinese multimedia artist Cao Fei to do it.

And sure enough, to make sure the new BMW Art Car in tune with the time, the artist came up with a concept that involves augmented and virtual reality. They say the design reflects the future of mobility such as autonomous driving, airborne cars and digitalization, but as with any modern work of art not every one agrees about the merits of the piece. The new art car, BMW Art Car #18, was unveiled today at the Minsheng Art Museum in Beijing on May 31 in presence of Dr Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. The base car is, as with the previous art car, an M6 GT3.

Cao Fei commented upon her BMW Art Car: “To me, light represents thoughts. As the speed of thoughts cannot be measured, the #18 Art Car questions the existence of the boundaries of the human mind. We are entering a new age, where the mind directly controls objects and where thoughts can be transferred, such as unmanned operations and artificial intelligence. Which attitudes and temperaments hold the key to opening the gateway to the new age?”
