Press Release:

Munich. Powerful, aesthetic design, supreme performance and exclusive style – the unique characteristics of the BMW M3 are now available in highly attractive Edition Models focusing on the most outstanding highlights of these outstanding cars.

Based on the BMW M3 Coupé, the M3 Edition Models offer a choice of no less than four highly individual cars boasting perfectly harmonised modifications in body design and interior features as well as special light-alloy wheels and an even lower chassis.

The BMW M3 Edition Models will be entering the market worldwide in July 2009 in Alpine White, Black, Dakar Yellow, and Monte Carlo Blue. In the interest of supreme exclusivity their production period is limited to just six months.
Individual highlights both outside and inside.

On the BMW M3 Edition Models the exterior paintwork and interior design are individually matched to one another. Depending on the respective Edition model, the body comes either in Alpine White Non-Metallic, Black Non-Metallic, Dakar Yellow Non-Metallic or Monte Carlo Blue Metallic. The combination with BMW Individual High-Gloss Satin Chrome accentuates the truly sophisticated character of the Edition Models.

The openings on the engine compartment lid on all models are finished in black, the BMW kidney grille, the side gills and the dual tailpipes on the exhaust system come in dark eloxy-plated chrome. The caps on the special BMW M exterior mirrors are likewise finished in black and are connected to the A-pillars by dual arms extending out of the mirror base finished in body colour.

Special colour highlights add an individual touch also to the interior of the BMW M3 Edition Models. The surfaces on the centre armrest, the centre console and the armrests on the door panels are finished in White on the Alpine White and Black models. At the same time these Edition Models come with interior trim in Carbon Structure Leather with white contrasting seams. The seats in Black Novillo Leather feature bespoke contrasting seams as well as vertical trim stripes on the upper section of the backrest and at the front of the legrest. On the Alpine White and Black models, these features come in white, on the Dakar Yellow and Monte Carlo Blue models they are in the appropriate exterior colour.

As a further feature the armrests and door closing handles at the inside on the Dakar Yellow and Monte Carlo Blue models come with yellow and, respectively, blue contrasting seams. And last but certainly not least, entry trim bars in Checkered Flag Design bearing the “M3“ model designation give all Edition Models yet another highlight.

Special rim design and lowered suspension.
To optimise the looks of the car, all four Edition Models come with specially designed light-alloy rims and a unique suspension: On all models the 19-inch forged M light-alloy rims in double-spoke design are available either in black or in the classic rim colour. And on the Alpine White, Black and Monte Carlo Blue models, the same rims are also available in a special white contrasting colour with polished spokes.

The suspension of the BMW M3 Edition Models adds to the sporting style of the cars, lowering the entire body by 10 millimetres or 0.4“.

BMW M3: supreme performance with eight cylinders and seven gears.
The BMW M3 Edition Models give this high-performance athlete a particularly striking look also reflected by the car’s supreme driving dynamics based on a unique all-round concept and drivetrain/suspension technology inspired by motorsport. The V8 high-speed power unit of the BMW M3 develops maximum output of 309 kW/420 hp from 4.0 litres.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels either through the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard or through the optional M double-clutch gearbox with Drivelogic enhancing both the dynamic performance and the all-round efficiency of the BMW M3 all in one. In this case acceleration to 100 km/h comes in 4.6 seconds (six-speed manual: 4.8 seconds) and average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 11.9 litres/23.7 mpg imp (six-speed manual: 12.4 litres/22.8 mpg imp)/100 kilometres.

The BMW M3 comes as standard with a lightweight carbon roof, while the options include Electronic Damper Control and the M Drive menu enabling the driver to configure individual, M-specific suspension and drivetrain functions just right for his personal style.

The jaw-dropping new Mercedes E63 AMG is eagerly waiting for its launch to take the market by storm and teach a good lesson to all of them sports saloons out there with its 525hp rumbling V8, which is the most powerful amongst its rivals and is also the most powerful E-class ever made. Now Mercedes has just announced its European price and, well it’s a bit high!

But then it should be, because this is a lot of car. Its 6.2 liter normally aspirated V8 is capable of 525 hp and 630 nm of torque which can take you from zero to 100 in 4.5 seconds in absolute comfort and while the other rivals stops at 250 this E63 keeps going right up to 300 km/h. Of course removing the limiter is an extra option which you have to ask for, but hey!

The car is also lighter, nimbler and more agile than the previous model, you get three settings (Comfort, Sport and Sport plus) for the electronic suspension, so handlingwise it’s almost there to be as good as a sports car, given the weight and all the luxury onboard. Also because of this lightness and with help of other fuel saving technologies, the E63 is one of the most economical cars in this segment. It averages 12.6 liters per 100km/h which is fantastic considering the performance it delivers. You can order the same sort of ceramic braking package they use for the SLR supercar for E63 which are so powerful that it hurts more braking than actually having the accident you are trying to avoid!

Already there is a huge demand for this car and people are queuing up to put their name down to get one, but it won’t hit the showroom floor until August with a price tag of 105,791 Euros.

So this is it! The very official data on the new BMW 5-series Gran Turismo which is a car in a league of its own since no one else has ever thought of combining a station wagon, a GT, a four door saloon and a coupe in one car! But BMW has done it and called it Sport Activity Gran Turismo! You might as well call it the BMW Swiss army knife!

Sure you have seen this car before because it was introduced at the time of Geneva Motorshow, and sure you realized that it is biblically awful in terms of styling! It is very clever, no doubt about that. Every bit of it is over engineered to make the most sense, but my God it’s ugly! And we thought that we might get used to it as we get to see it more often but it just gets worse!

The 5er GT comes with three different engines when it is launched. The first is the 530d a turbo-diesel with 245 hp and 540 Nm of torque and fuel consumption of just 6.5 liter per 100 km. Then there is the petrol powered 3.0 liter 6-cylinder in-line 535i which has two turbochargers and develops 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. And at the top of the range there is the 550i which has the new 4.4 liter V8 with 407 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It also gets the BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission.

The car is really full of high-tech stuffs and smart ideas. Unfortunately it is too boring too mention all of them here so if you have any interest to know them check out the press release at the end of the article for full details. What we liked amongst them all is the new 10.2 inch LCD and the clever seats by which you can trade legroom for more luggage space. At its best the 5-series GT has 1700 liters cargo capacity.

Not sure if anyone is interested in buying this car with its catastrophic looks but anyhow, it will be out in October with prices starting from 55,200 Euros.

And why dont you check out a new video of it?! It might look better in motion! (just kidding, it won’t!)

BMW has put out a huge picture gallery of the 5-series GT but we didn’t want to make you sick so picked the most tolerable ones you see here

Full details of BMW 5-series Gran Turismo in this official press release:

Description in brief:

BMW is once again defining a brand-new segment in the automobile market. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines elegance, space, comfort and variability in truly unique style. As an attractive, future-oriented extension of the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is quite unparalleled worldwide in the upper middle segment, combining the characteristic features of a prestige saloon, a modern, highly versatile Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo in brand-new, unprecedented style.

Through its body design, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the proportions so typical of a BMW, an elegantly stretched silhouette and a coupé-like roofline, as well as four doors with frameless windows to create one complete, harmonious unit. The front view of the car animates powerful dynamism through the sheer presence of the upright BMW kidney grille, large air intakes and dual round headlights slanted back at an attractive angle. For the first time the daytime driving light function is provided by corona rings with LED technology. Boasting clear-cut horizontal lines, the rear end comes with that characteristic look of width, power and muscle further enhanced by L-shaped rear light clusters with homogenously illuminated rows of lights in LED technology.

The luxurious and, for a car with this kind of coupé-like silhouette, surprisingly generous and variable interior gives both the driver and passengers a spontaneous feeling of comfort and well-being. This superior feeling is further enhanced by comfortable entry to the car, the slightly elevated seating position, the large window areas, the optional panorama glass roof, as well as exquisite materials and supreme quality of finish.

Flexibly adjustable, the interior of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo enables the driver and passengers to vary the generous space inside the car as they wish to their individual, personal requirements. In their standard position, the rear seats offer the passengers the same kind of legroom as in the BMW 7 Series combined with the same headroom as in the BMW X5. In this configuration, luggage capacity is already an ample 440 litres or 15.4 cu ft. Thanks to the partition behind the rear seats, the passenger and luggage compartments are separated acoustically and in terms of climate conditions from one another like in a saloon. When required, the rear seats may be moved individually to the front by up to 100 millimetres or almost 4″, with legroom still remaining the same as in the BMW 5 Series Saloon and an increase in luggage capacity to 590 litres or 20.7 cu ft. And after folding down the rear-seat backrests together with the partition, finally, luggage space increases to its maximum capacity of 1,700 litres or 59.5 cu ft.

Offering unique functionality, the two-piece tailgate on the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo provides exceptional variability and maximum comfort in loading the luggage compartment. Opening the small, sedan-like luggage compartment lid beneath the rear window, with the tailgate as such remaining closed, the driver and passengers are able to conveniently load the rear compartment without causing any unpleasant noise, draughts or changes in temperature within the passenger compartment. To load large and bulky objects, on the other hand, all they have to do is open the large tailgate for maximum convenience.

The sheer space and the inspiring, modern design of the interior team up to provide a truly luxurious ambience and the supreme long-distance comfort of a modern Gran Turismo. The sleek surfaces on the front and rear door panels merging smoothly into one another as well as the horizontal arrangement of the instrument panel enhance the impression of supreme generosity. Seat comfort, headroom and elbow freedom are all of the highest standard otherwise to be found only in the luxury performance class. The slightly elevated seating position, the clear, structured arrangement of the controls, BMW’s new iDrive with its Control Display up to 10.2 inches in size, and the cockpit in Black Panel technology all help to give the driver maximum supremacy at all times. The rear seats may be adjusted individually fore-and-aft and also come with individual adjustment of the backrest angle. To meet the greatest demands in terms of individual luxury, finally, two individual comfort seats at the rear are available as an option.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is entering the market with a choice of no less than three ultra-modern drive units carrying over BMW -EfficientDynamics into a new segment in the automobile world. The BMW 530d Gran Turismo offers a truly unique, unparalleled balance of driving experience and fuel economy with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of just 6.5 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 43.5 mpg imp, and a CO2 rating of 173 g/km. The two gasoline models also set new standards for efficiency in their respective engine class.

As a world-first achievement introducing a new and even more efficient range of engines, the BMW 535i Gran Turismo comes with the first straight-six gasoline engine featuring TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC and developing maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp. The top engine in the range, finally, is the V8 TwinPower Turbo delivering maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp in the BMW 550i Gran Turismo. The BMW 530d Gran Turismo, in turn, comes with a 180 kW/245 hp straight-six diesel of the latest generation with an all-aluminium crankcase and common-rail direct fuel injection. All engines naturally fulfil the EU5 emission standard.

All model variants come as standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission previously to be admired only in the BMW 760i twelve-cylinder luxury saloon. Featuring an innovative configuration of gearsets, a unique level of internal efficiency, and the same low weight and compact dimensions as a six-speed automatic transmission, this high-tech automatic combines gearshift comfort, dynamic performance, and motoring efficiency of the highest calibre. The most advanced engine technology, the innovative eight-speed automatic transmission, and a wide range of unique technologies in the context of BMW EfficientDynamics allow the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo to set new standards also in terms of economy and emission management.

The modern, demanding suspension technology of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is designed for both fascinating driving dynamics and supreme grand touring comfort. The double track control arm front axle and the Integral-V rear axle exclusive to BMW are made largely of aluminium. Standard features also include rear axle air suspension as well as hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering with a steering servo pump operating on demand. Integral Active Steering is available as an option, combining active steering of the front wheels with rear-wheel steering varying according to driving conditions and current requirements.

Featured as standard, Dynamic Drive Control influences not only the gearshift dynamics, but also the gas pedal and steering assistance control map. In combination with optional Adaptive Drive, the dampers with infinite variation on both the inbound and rebound stroke contribute to the superior suspension function. In addition to the NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ programs, the driver also has the choice of the COMFORT mode available directly from the Dynamic Drive Control button on the centre console. A further point is that intervention in DSC Dynamic Stability Control is reduced in the SPORT+ setting and in the traction mode.

The optimised body structure in conjunction with appropriately coordinated and electronically masterminded passive safety systems ensures maximum occupant safety at all times. These systems include three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats, frontal and side airbags as well as head airbags at the side, crash-activated headrests at the front, runflat tyres and a tyre defect indicator. The standard features include foglamps and adaptive brake lights, with bi-xenon dual headlights including a daytime driving light function as well as Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution and Bending Lights all coming as an option.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is also available as an option with the complete range of features from BMW ConnectedDrive, including Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a High-Beam Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, Side View, Top View, and a back-up camera. Over and above these outstanding features, BMW ConnectedDrive also offers BMW Online, BMW Assist, BMW TeleServices, as well as an Enhanced Emergency Call function automatically determining and reporting the current location of the car.

The wide range of standard features offered by the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo includes automatic air conditioning, an audio system, an AUX-In connector bush, and the Integrated Owner’s Manual. Optional features include four-zone automatic air conditioning (standard in the BMW 550i Gran Turismo), telecommunication and navigation systems, a USB port, an 80 GB hard disc for navigation data and the user’s private music collection, a multi-channel audio system, a DAB double tuner, a DVD entertainment system at the rear, a Head-Up Display, a panorama glass roof optimised for noise control and attractive design, as well as an electrically swivelling trailer hook.

No AMG treatment for the new E-class Coupe?! It just doesn’t matter anymore because the best of Mercedes tuners , Brabus, has just announced its tuning package for the new E-Coupe and there are quit a lot of power in it! This car started life as an E500 with 338 horsepower, but after the Brabus treatment it is now capable of 462 horsepower and massive torque of 615 nm!

Gaining this much additional power however, was not easy. First they had to drill out the cylinder blocks again to increase engine capacity from 5.5 to 6.1 liters. Same operation had to be done for the cylinderheads to house new sport camshafts. An enhanced crankshaft and a new sport exhaust system and of course some electronic upgrades are other parts of this extreme makeover. As you guess it’s not cheap! the engine package cost you 29,000 Euros.
So the Brabus E-Class coupe goes from zero to hundred in 4.7 second which is about a second faster than the standard E500 and while the stock car has to be happy with top speed only 250 kph, the tuned car goes all the way up to 315 kph!

It’s not just power power power though. Brabus E-Class comes with a nice and discrete bodykit as well. The new front apron features daytime running LED lights and some carbon inserts on the sides of the bumper. Sporty side skirts and modified rear apron with a pair of twin tailpipes are other parts of this aerodynamic kit. The car is also lowered and fitted with big Brabus wheels available from 17 to 20 inch. These wheels which house bigger brakes inside them, look pretty sick in the flared arches of the Eclass coupe.

Brabus also has a power upgrade package for the diesel powered cars. Brabus D4 package boost the power of E250 CDi engine from 204 to 234 hp and cost about 1400 Euros. You can also order their interior package which contains high quality leather upholstery, sport steering wheel, entertainment system and most important of them all, illuminated sills with Brabus logo!

2010 Ford Mustang is a truly lovely car which offers many great things for very low price! Its retro design shape is very cool, its range of engines is satisfactory, it is well equipped and best of all it’s got character. It’s a muscle car with great heritage. And now add safety to the list as well as it achieved the U.S. government’s top 5-star safety ratings.

SUMMARY:

The 2010 Ford Mustang coupe has earned the U.S. government’s top 5-star safety ratings, which includes 5-stars for driver and passenger in front and side crash tests, as well as for rollover performance

Ford has more U.S. government 5-star ratings than any other automotive brand

Mustang remains the number one selling sports car by a wide margin, with nearly a 40 percent share of the segment in April; May sales ahead of projections

CONTEXT / BACKGROUND:

The 2010 Ford Mustang coupe has earned the U.S. government’s top 5-star crash-test rating, adding to widespread acclaim for the new car’s unmistakable design and upgraded performance that builds on the formula that’s made it America’s favorite pony car for 45 years. Ford has more U.S. government 5-star-rated vehicles than any other brand and more Top Safety Pick ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other automaker.

DETAILS:

The new Mustang uses high strength steel in its body structure and uses ultra high strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side impact protection.

The Mustang’s considerable body stiffness contributes to the coupe and convertible’s driving performance and has a parallel benefit in accident protection. While the coupe’s body structure is approximately 31 percent stiffer than the previous Mustang platform, the convertible’s is more than twice as stiff – creating a structure that helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion during an impact.

The front structure’s crush zones are computer-designed to absorb energy in a controlled manner and help dissipate it before it can reach the passenger compartment. Ford engineers have run thousands of design iterations of the Mustang’s front rails to arrive at an octagonal shape that helps spread crash forces evenly to help protect occupants.

AdvanceTrac(TM) Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is now standard and complements Mustang’s all-speed traction control and anti-lock braking system (ABS). Additional standard safety equipment includes: anti-lock brakes (ABS), Beltminder(R) and the Personal Safety System(TM) – a system that includes dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, safety belt pretensioners and State-of-the-art technology adds to the convenience and safety of the 2010 Mustang, from the availability of the latest version of Ford SYNC(R), with new features 911 Assist(TM) and Vehicle Health Report, to standard AdvanceTrac(R) Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and anti-lock braking system.

Sales Leader

Mustang remains the number one selling sports car by a wide margin, with the new 2010 model driving showroom traffic. In April, Mustang had nearly a 40 percent share of the retail sports car segment.

QUOTES:

“The Mustang offers top safety ratings that, like its design and performance, other sports cars cannot match.”

- Sue Cischke,

Ford Group Vice President of Ford Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering

“We’ve made many upgrades to the new Mustang that contributes not only

to the car’s safety, but also to its driving enjoyment thanks to a

stiffer structure.”

- Steve Kozak,

Ford Chief Engineer for Safety Systems
“Interest in the fast, fun and affordable Mustang remains outstanding. The feedback from our dealers and customers is that we’ve taken the new 2010 Mustang to a new level of excellence.”

The idea of having a drop top SUV is very tempting, but no manufacturer has tried it so far ( those topless Jeep Wranglers don’t count, we are talking proper SUVs!) for whatever reason, safety or cost or…, but apparently Nissan is going to take the risk and make a convertible version of its trendy 4×4, the Murano.

According to the source the Murano convertible will be a two-door with a traditional fabric roof rather than a folding metal one to keep the weight and presumably the costs low. And it will come, like the normal Murano, in one trim and option level with the same 3.5 liter V6 engine developing 265 hp and the CVT gearbox. The hardtop Murano is very well-known for its ride quality so let’s hope that this drop top conversion won’t ruin it! Because when you remove the roof of a car, more importantly a SUV in this case, a lot of structural works need to be done to make sure the handling is right or else you end up with something which drives like a clown car! Naturally for a high-riding SUV that is trickier.

So expect the Murano Convertible to arrive in about a year, although they say it’ll be produced in limited numbers.

If you are a regular reader of MotorWard these pictures look familiar to you because we have featured them about a month ago. Now though there are these official shots giving you the best view of the car yet, before its launch at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. And yes, there is a video too so you can watch it in motion!

The new Astra inherits many of its body lines and features from the bigger Insignia that also means that it has grown in size. At 4.42 meters the new Astra is about 17 cm longer than the old one so it is considerably more spacious in the cabin and in the boot.

It is much more sophisticated as well, it features a new chassis and a very clever electronically-controlled suspension system. So you can change its settings at the touch of a button and change the feel of the car according to your needs. This is a feature usually seen in bigger more expensive cars. Another amazing technology that is a first with the Astra is a camera system called the ‘Opel Eye’. It can be used to read the traffic signs or act as a lane assist system which warns the driver in case he or she is not sober!! That’s not the end of it of course, we can mention adaptive bi-xenon headlights or ergonomically shaped seats as well.

As for the engines there is a wide range of options to satisfy every taste. And they all meet the Euro5 emissions standard. Diesel ones include a 1.3, a 1.7 and a 2.0 liter ranging from 95 to 160 hp. An Eco-flex model will be added to the lineup in 2010. As for the petrol engines, there is a 1.4 liter which can produce 120 hp normally and 140 hp if fitted with a turocharger. Then there is the 1.6 liter turbo with 180 hp which replaces the current 1.8 liter. Petrol units will also get the Ecoflex treatment.

So, there you go, the new 2010 Opel Astra with all its glory and heritage in new style and with new technologies on board! Now check out the video of the car:

Press Release:

“The Opel Insignia has newly interpreted the mid-size segment. Now, with its dynamic design and innovative technology – much of which has been the preserve of higher-class vehicles before now – the new Opel Astra generation will continue the pioneering role of its large model brother,” says Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer at GM Europe, describing the future model. “To put it in a nutshell, the next Opel Astra will carry the spirit of the Insignia into the compact class.”

The all new fourth Opel Astra generation will make its world debut as a five-door hatchback at the 2009 IAA (September 17-27) in Frankfurt, Germany. “Sculptural artistry meets German precision – that was our design claim with the Insignia and it remains so with the new Opel Astra but with an even more sporty presence,” explains Mark Adams, Vice President of Design at GM Europe. “The present Opel Astra already combines a high level of technical substance with emotional styling. You can see that most clearly with the Opel Astra GTC. With the next Opel Astra generation we are taking another big step forward in both respects and emphasizing its sporty credentials.”

With its flowing lines, the next Opel Astra will carry on from the Insignia. At the same time, it will pick up on design features that have been found in many models throughout Opel’s history- especially in the compact class. The integrated front headlamps of the first Kadett of 1936 are one example. Another is the aerodynamic design of the 1984 Kadett E. Other areas in which the next Opel Astra will evolve the Opel language are its proportions, which give the car its sporty and muscular look. Typical style characteristics of the new, finer design language- elements like the flowing dynamic surfaces, the signature sculpted blade and the warm, wrap-around interior theme with wing-line sweep that links the instrument panel to the door – are found in modified form in the new compact class model. Also characteristic is the high attention to detail and craftsmanship. It could well set new standards in its class.

Hans Demant, Managing Director Adam Opel GmbH, referring to the present Opel Astra, whets people’s appetite for the next generation: “Just think of all the innovations Opel has introduced into the previous compact class generations. Moreover, the current Opel Astra is the most innovative compact class model Opel has ever built. It cost us a great deal of effort, but it has placed us among the leaders in the market on a permanent basis. It made the development of the next Opel Astra generation an even bigger challenge, but it was one we were pleased to take up.”

With technical innovations like the Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) headlamp system, which has been taken to a higher level and supplemented by new functions, and the “Opel Eye,” the new compact class generation will once again assume an outstanding position in this segment.

The all-new chassis will be mated with equally new engines designed following the right-sizing concept that combines high low-end torque with moderate fuel consumption.

Versatility is another traditional strength of Opel vehicles, as demonstrated by the FlexFix integrated rear end carrier in the Corsa and Antara. The new Astra will also pick up on clever and practical ideas like this.

TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS

The Opel philosophy has always been to make top-level innovative technology affordable for a wide range of buyers. Accordingly, the new compact class generation will offer plenty of comfort and safety features that have previously been confined to higher segments. Here are just two of the many examples.

CAMERA SYSTEM

When it made its debut in the Insignia, the driver assistance system “Opel Eye” created considerable buzz as a safety innovation. In the compact class, the camera system will create at least as much of a stir. “Opel Eye” will make driving the Opel Astra safer. A camera integrated between the interior mirror and the windshield assists drivers in two ways. The traffic sign recognition function scans traffic signs that indicate speed limits or overtaking bans and displays them in the instrument panel. In addition, a lane departure warning alerts drivers if they unintentionally leave their chosen lane. Both systems improve traffic safety, reduce stress and help avoid expensive fines.

NEXT GENERATION CORNERING LIGHT

Around 80 percent of all road accidents occur at night. This is where the upgraded AFL system in the next Opel Astra comes into its own, helping drivers to see better at night. It is also evidence of how Opel is democratizing active safety. The Opel Astra H was the first compact class car to offer AFL lighting with steering-linked bi-xenon headlamps. The AFL system on this next generation will offer a variety of light functions, providing better visibility because AFL automatically adapts to different road and driving conditions.

The topless version of Maserati GranTurismo is set to debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and it’ll hit the market in early 2010. These are the latest spy pictures of the car showing it in heavy disguise which again raise some controversy about its roof!

Some say the Maser Spyder will feature a folding hard-top while the others believe it will be 2+2 with a soft-top. And you know what, it doesn’t matter really! because the GranTurismo is a handsome car, either with hard or soft top it’ll maintain its charm and to worry about the weight or handling issues because of the roof is totally pointless, since it’s a GT cruiser not a hardcore sports car. Click here for more details on the Maserati GT Spyder.

BMW and Mercedes have already introduced their new contenders for the luxury segment, the 7-series and the S-class. But Audi does not seem to be in a hurry! The work is slowly underway for the new generation of Audi A8 but it should be ready for the IAA Motor Show in September 2009.

The A8 has always been considered as a conservative design, a bit too ordinary for a fine luxury saloon. Although the new model will be facelifted but it’s not likely to change its attitude much. However, its winning card is not styling, but the number of new technologies you will get with it and the superb feel of quality you can only experience in an Audi A8, Some say it’ll be ‘The best Audi of all times!’ Of course to cope with the competition they have to be very up to date, so expect features like night vision system, radar-guided cruise control and Audi’s new start/stop system.

What’s the easiest way to make a desirable car even cooler?! Drop its top! As we learned from the spyshots that is exactly what Maserati has done to their brilliant Gran Turismo. Masser GT is an exquisite Italian mix of great looks, powerful engine and very fine luxury.

To get a better idea of how the convertible version of the GT would look like, take a glance at this rendering by Caranddriver:

You look at it and instantly cars like Mercedes SL and Jaguar XK pops into your mind. So if you are out shopping for a V8 drop-top you are advised to hold on a bit till this Italian diva arrives in early 2010.

Rumor had it that the Maserati Gran Turismo Spider will feature a folding metal roof, but apparently the production version will come with a fabric top instead. And that’s good news because a metal roof might sound great as an option but it is noticeably heavy and the weight would ruin the cars handling and performance, specially for this car since the GT is not particulary fast. It is powered by a 405hp V8 which does its best when mated to an automatic gearbox. That makes the GT a perfect cruiser in which you can cover great distances with a smile on your face all the way. It is not by any mean a growling V8 like the one you get in a Ferrari 430.

The new Maserati Gran Turismo Spider will be priced to match the competition out there so expect it for 120-30 grand.

Like always the first thing you get is the set of ACS wheels which are available in different sizes. Other modifications will include performance engine upgrades, a sports rear silencer, suspension optimization ,aerodynamic components, and interior accessories. Ac-Schnitzer is kinda trying to make a Z4M replica since BMW has announced they cannot be bothered to make one!

Styling aside, AC-Schnitzer is one of the finest BMW tuners who offers top notch accessories for the ultimate driving machine. But as it’s the case with Germans, where engineers excel, designers suck!

Press Release:

RENAULT UNVEILS NEW CLIO RENAULTSPORT 200

* Clio Renaultsport launched in two versions: Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup and Clio Renaultsport 200
* New, more aggressive design with F1-style frontal aerodynamics, new alloy wheels and rear diffuser
* Independent steering axis front suspension with revised suspension and steering settings for the standard and Cup chassis
* More powerful engine with improved low-down torque, economy and emissions
* Best power-to-weight ratio in its class (166hp per tonne)
* Extensive personalisation choices with interior and exterior colour options available through the Renault i.d. programme
* UK launch 15th May with first deliveries from end of June
* Priced from £15,750 on the road

Since 2000, the successive variants of Clio Renaultsport have resulted in it becoming the most popular hot hatch of its class, with over 70,000 worldwide sales. The Renaultsport version of the brand’s best-selling model has been unanimously praised by enthusiastic owners as one of the market’s best hot hatches, and also one of the most fun to drive. The challenge faced by the engineers from Renault Sport Technologies was to build on the existing qualities of Clio Renaultsport 197 and take its inherent strengths and dynamism to a new level.

New exterior design

Clio Renaultsport 200′s performance credentials are evident in its exterior design. Its styling includes aerodynamic features which take their inspiration from the world of Formula 1:

* an aerodynamic blade built into the front bumper
* front wing air-extractors and a rear diffuser, two technologies which form a package that is unique in the hot hatch market.

A powerful stance
As with the Clio Renaultsport 197, compared to the standard Clio, the wings are 30.5mm wider to accommodate the wider front and rear tracks which have been extended by 48mm and 50mm respectively. The more aggressive frontal styling incorporates a new, generously-sized, low-positioned air intake, designed to feed cooling air to the normally-aspirated 200hp 2.0 16V engine.

The sills, extractors and wider front and rear wings all highlight the performance credentials of Clio Renaultsport 200 which features Renaultsport’s new styling cues in the form of the Renault i.d. Design Pack: a two-tone colour scheme based on a choice of Gloss Black or Anthracite finish for the front bumper centre section and blade, door mirror housings and rear diffuser. The diffuser now incorporates more visible twin exhaust tailpipes. A new design of alloy wheel completes the revised appearance.

Clio Renaultsport 200 sees the introduction of a brand new, exclusive Alien Green pearlescent paint finish. The pearlescent Liquid Yellow returns to Clio Renaultsport 200 after only being available previously on the limited-edition Clio Renaultsport 197 F1 Team R27. Mercury also becomes available for the first time joining the Glacier White, Ultra Red, Racing Blue and the metallic Albi Blue, Nimbus and Deep Black.

Aerodynamics derived from Formula 1 technology
Clio Renaultsport 200′s aerodynamics include a new frontal blade, front-wing air-extractors and a rear air diffuser, a development which is unique for this segment. Thanks to these features which take their inspiration from Formula 1, Clio Renaultsport 200′s aerodynamic drag has been cut by 0.02 compared with that of its predecessor to 0.753.

The extractors visible on the front wings contribute to the car’s aerodynamic performance by neutralising the turbulence produced by the wider wings and play a part in improving the model’s CdA. They also facilitate the extraction of hot air from underneath the bonnet, while the vents are angled to channel airflow along the sides of the car for enhanced performance.

Clio Renaultsport 200 is also equipped with an air diffuser, an aerodynamic feature normally only found on high-end sporting cars. Air passing underneath the vehicle is channelled via the flat bottom to the diffuser where it accelerates before being expelled at a higher speed. Combined with the shape of the diffuser, this creates a zone of depression under the car, sucking the chassis to the ground. Compared with a conventional wing, diffusers generate significant downforce without resisting forward movement. On a track, at 80mph, lift is reduced by almost 40kg. The diffuser is designed to function in association with the rear flat bottom which leaves space for the exhaust silencer and lateral-mounted tailpipes.

Personalisation

In addition to the exterior personalisation, the interior can also be tailored to suit the owner’s taste thanks to a new range of finishes and upholsteries with Renault i.d.

The interior performance credentials are mirrored in details such as the aluminium pedal facings, as well as by the perforated leather-covered steering wheel with visible stitching and yellow centre-point marker. The unique Renaultsport seats are exceptionally comfortable and ensure a high level of body-hugging lateral support. The new yellow rev-counter includes an audible and visible gearshift indicator to help optimise gear changes. The size of the figures displayed on the rev-counter increases as the needle approaches the red zone. Renaultsport badging is visible inside the cabin on the rev-counter background, sills and front seats.

With Renault i.d., customers have a choice of three interior trim colours (Grey, Yellow or Carbon for the seats, seatbelts and fascia trim) enabling customers to personalise their car to their taste. Customers looking for additional luxury will be tempted by the optional leather upholstery.

Seats designed and developed in association with Recaro continue to be available. They are equipped with lateral airbags, plus a rigid, glass-fibre/polyamide-injected shell which provides the sort of all-enveloping experience associated with motor sport. The slots for the harness belts and integral headrest add a further sporty touch, while at the same time holding occupants firmly in place.

New suspension settings

As with the previous Clio Renaultsport 197, Clio Renaultsport 200 benefits from significant changes compared with the standard version of Clio. The front and rear tracks are wider by 48mm and 50mm respectively and the wheelbase is extended by 10mm to 2,585mm for greater stability.

The front suspension’s independent steering axis layout is unique to the B segment. This technology significantly reduces torque steer under acceleration. Unlike a MacPherson-type arrangement, the steering axis of the front suspension is totally independent of damping. To minimise weight, Clio Renaultsport 200′s independent steering axis front suspension employs aluminium components and guarantees precise handling and outstanding traction whatever the conditions. The rear suspension is based on that of Clio 2009 and features a programmed deflection torsion beam which has been uprated by 25 per cent to complement the efficiency of the front’s independent steering axis layout for precise, immediate turn-in.

In response to customer demand, the suspension settings for both the standard car and the hard core, Cup set-up have been revised.

Standard chassis: efficiency and comfort
The development of the standard chassis from the Clio Renaultsport 197 was guided by a bid to strike the best possible balance between performance and comfort when driven daily. Clio Renaultsport 200 marks an improvement in terms of comfort over its predecessor thanks to:

* new damper settings (15 per cent softer),
* the use of hydraulic double-effect dampers. The energy which needs to be dissipated is absorbed in part by an additional level of valving. The performance of these new dampers is particularly appreciable on longer journeys and motorway drives.

Meanwhile, body movement is kept in check thanks to the larger diameter front anti-roll bar, up from 20mm to 21mm. Specifically-developed Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres (215/45 R17) ensure swifter, more precise steering response. The new design of the standard aluminium alloy wheels is now 1kg lighter and the ensuing gain in terms of unsprung weight contributes further to the new car’s enhanced steering response and crisp acceleration.

The ‘Cup’ chassis: glued to the road
New Clio Renaultsport 200 is also available with the Cup chassis which has been engineered to deliver an exacting ride and uncompromising driving enjoyment. Its ability to corner flat is enhanced by:

* uprated dampers (15 per cent stiffer) compared with the Cup setting on Clio Renaultsport 197
* stiffer springs compared with the standard chassis (uprated 27 per cent at the front and 30 per cent at the rear) for even better handling

The ride height remains 7mm lower than that of the standard chassis and the resulting lower centre of gravity ensures improved cornering performance thanks to reduced weight transfer. Torsional rigidity has been improved by 10 per cent enabling the potential of the independent steering axis front suspension to be fully exploited.

Last but not least, the Cup chassis now comes with a higher ratio steering rack (7.5% quicker than the standard chassis) which, combined with other specific development work, favours feedback to the driver in conditions of varying grip.

The Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup weighs 1204kg boasting the best power-to-weight ratio in its class at 166hp per tonne.

The Cup chassis and steering setting is standard on the Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup and optional on the Clio Renaultsport 200. Externally it can be identified by anthracite finish to the alloy wheels and red brake callipers.

Powerful, durable brakes
Clio Renaultsport 200′s powerful, durable brakes combine with the latest Continental Sport 3 tyres (215/45) to guarantee stopping distances identical to those of very high-end sporting models. Pedal travel is progressive and easy to gauge. The 312mm-diameter ventilated front discs are paired with four-pot Brembo callipers, while the 300mm-diameter rear discs function with single-piston TRW callipers.

More power and efficiency

Clio Renaultsport 200 is powered by the latest-specification normally-aspirated 2.0 16V engine (F4R RS). With a specific power output of more than 100hp/litre, this powerplant delivers an extremely high level of performance for the hot hatch segment. In addition to the gains achieved at low revs, peak power has been increased by 3hp to 200hp at 7,100rpm. Meanwhile, the low-end (below 3,000rpm) torque boasted by Clio Renaultsport 200 has been boosted by an impressive 20 per cent over that of the 197 thanks to a new cylinder head and fine-tuning of the engine mapping.

The first, second and third gear ratios have all been shortened for punchier acceleration and to facilitate motoring in built-up areas. This engine drives through a manual six-speed gearbox (TL4) and claims maximum torque of 215Nm at 5,400rpm (compared with 5,500rpm for Clio Renaultsport 197). Clio Renaultsport accelerates from standstill to 62mph in just 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed, where permissible, of 141mph.

Despite the power increase, an illustration of the development work that has gone into this powertrain has resulted in its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions being slightly reduced to 34.4mpg in the combined cycle and 195g/km.

TWO DISTINCT VERSIONS

To meet customer demand even more closely, the Clio Renaultsport 200 range is offered again in two distinct versions:

* Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup – for enthusiastic customers who are passionate about their driving. This version has the Cup chassis as standard
* Clio Renaultsport 200 – for customers looking for a well-equipped performance car. This version has a higher level of standard equipment. The Cup chassis setting is available as an option.

Alright it’s simple! If you buy one of these very soon you will miss your local gas station because it just keeps going on and on! In fact on a single tank of fuel, it can cover 1,445.7 miles or 2325 kilometers! It is averaging 81.5 mpg or about 3.5 liters per 100 KM. An astonishing record. Of course that is achieved by an extreme eco-minded driving, however if you get 70 percent of that in real world, that’s still brilliant.

WASHINGTON — The Ford Fusion Hybrid has posted impressive numbers in an endurance feat that saw it run for 69 consecutive hours and 1,445.7 miles on a single tank of gasoline. Average fuel economy was an impressive 81.5 mpg. Ford says “drivers trained in mileage-maximizing techniques” were part of the reason the Fusion Hybrid was able to run so efficiently. The company calls it a world record for a gasoline-powered car in the mid-size sedan category.

Ford lists the 2010 Fusion Hybrid’s fuel economy as 41 miles per gallon in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, meaning the test run came just short of doubling the fuel economy numbers despite a route that included city driving.

Ford set up the Fusion Hybrid 1,000-Mile Challenge in and around Washington, D.C., to demonstrate the potential mileage of the mid-size sedan and to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The team of seven drivers for the challenge included NASCAR racer Carl Edwards, CleanMPG.com founder and mileage-maximization guru Wayne Gerdes and several Ford engineers. Some of the techniques they used were coasting up to stop signs and red lights, accelerating smoothly and gradually, minimizing the use of heating and air conditioning units, closing windows at high speed to cut drag and anticipating traffic conditions to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and avoid unnecessary braking.

Ford noted that the driving techniques were paired with keeping the Fusion under 47 mph as much as possible, where it can run on all-electric power. However, the company said, the tips “can be used in any vehicle to improve fuel economy.”

For the less-trained driver, Ford says, the Fusion Hybrid’s SmartGauge with Eco Guide instrument cluster helps “coach drivers” to get maximum fuel economy numbers.

In his ‘Thrill’ DVD, Jeremy Clarkson tested Porsche 911 GT3 and he said that this car won’t tolerate fools. Moments later he crashed it! For making this promo film of new 2010 GT3, Porsche asked Walter Rohrl, former rally champion and head of their factory drivers to have a go in it. That’s the only reason you might wanna watch the video, otherwise you really wouldn’t because the car is exactly same as old one! Of course he is not pushing the car to its limits but it’s still a nice piece of driving.
