More details emerge on the upcoming Mercedes A25 hot-hatch, revealing that it’ll have no less than 335bhp.

Mercedes AMG clearly want to outpower the competition, namely the Audi RS3 and BMW M135i. For that the A25 will be fitted with a new AMG 2.0 liter turbocharged engine developed jointly by their British High Performance Engine (HPE) division in Northamptonshire.

The base for this powertrain in the current 2.0 liter Kompressor used widely in Mercedes saloon cars, but it’s heavily revised and benefits from high performance stuff such as gas-driven twin-scroll turbocharger and the latest in piezo-guided direct injection.

So the minimum output of this super hot hatchback will be 335bhp. That engine, after all, is developed by the guys who make Formula 1 engines, so it’s ought to be good. AMG will also put it in a number of future models, including the CLC25 AMG and CLC25 Shooting Brake AMG.

But that’s not the only factor that gives the A25 the edge over its rivals. The car will also have four-wheel-drive system to make the best of its power. Can’t wait to see how it looks.

Mercedes AMG released some new footage of the 2012 SLK55 AMG, showing it drive about and cruise in and out of town.

This video kinda proves our theory about the new generation of Mercedes sportscars. This new SLK and the recently introduced 2013 Mercedes SL, they both look ungainly and frankly terrible in the pictures. But in the videos they are far more desirable. So one should imagine they would look alright in person! We know the SLK does, and we hope that’ll be the case with the SL as well.

The new SLK55 AMG has one of the most fuel efficient V8s AMG has ever made, complete with start/stop and cylinder shut-off systems. But don’t think for a minute the car’s gone all soft. It might not have the turbos, but it still makes 415 hp and maximum torque of 398 lb-ft, it still does 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and it still sounds awesome.

Mercedes decided to use its Formula 1 team to promote the in-house tuner AMG.

So Mercedes Petronas GP team has been renamed to MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. it’ll come to effect from 2012 season. They are currently working on a new car for next year, codenamed F1 W03. It is set for official track debut at the second winter test of 2012, on 21 February at Barcelona.

Hopefully the new car and the new name will be luckier for Mercedes and their drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

Mercedes-Benz Formula One powertrain facility, located in Brixworth, UK will also be renamed to Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. AMG is not only responsible for Mercedes’ high-end sports models, they are also the motorpsort arm of the company and have a long and glorious history in DTM.

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, said: “Our new team name fuses the proud traditions of AMG and the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows at the pinnacle of motorsport. These three letters are synonymous with high technology, sporting performance and excitement and this step is a further strong sign of the strategic commitment Mercedes-Benz has made to Formula One. 16 of the 24 drivers on the grid at the season’s final Grand Prix in Brazil have, or have had, a connection to Mercedes-Benz. In addition to the role of a works team, our commitment to Formula One comprises the customer engine programme and supply of the official Safety and Medical Cars.”

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commented: “The Mercedes AMG brand promises ‘Driving Performance’ – and what better embodies this philosophy than the intense competitive arena of Formula One? It is an historic first for the AMG name to be associated to the works Silver Arrows team, and offers fantastic opportunities: first, to further build the sporting identity of the Mercedes AMG brand through one of the world’s most-watched and most successful sports; second, to explore and deliver technology transfer between road and track. This is already being practised with the SLS AMG E-Cell project, whose electric powertrain will be developed as a joint venture between Mercedes AMG and our F1 engine specialists in Brixworth.”

Team Principal Ross Brawn concluded: “We are very proud to reveal our new team name today. It adds another strong performance element to our team’s identity and, by virtue of being shared between Brackley and Brixworth, will forge even stronger links within our team. At the factory, we have been focused for some time on the challenge of 2012, and our very clear ambition to move forward up the grid next year. As always, the winter development and manufacturing processes are a trade-off between time for finding performance in the factory, and time for delivering that performance during pre-season testing. We believe that the decision to run the car at the second winter test is the optimum compromise for our design and development programme with F1 W03.”

Mercedes took the wraps off the new ML63 AMG ahead of its world premiere at L.A. Autoshow.

First things first, the new Mercedes ML63 has got 518 hp and torque of 516 lb-ft. That comes from the new 5.5 liter biturbo V8 that replaces the old 6.3 liter unit, and features spray-guided gasoline direct injection with piezo injectors, ECO stop/start system, an all-aluminum crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water charge air cooling and efficient alternator management.

All that means the classic zero to 60 mph sprint takes 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is 155 mph. Better still if you fit the car with the optional AMG Performance Package that boosts the V8 engine’s power output to 550 hp and its maximum torque to 560 lb-ft. It shaves only a 0.1 of a second off the acceleration time, but lets you do 174 mph which is great.

You also get Merc’s AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission which besides the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving program, also offers an ECO mode. But don’t expect such a fast SUV to be economical. You should be happy if you could get more than 16 mpg out of it.

As for the looks, the standard ML is a good-looking SUV, but the AMG version, especially at the back, looks a bit weird. The front of the car is OK, what with the AMG-style bumper and bold grille, but those ducts in the rear bumper and those exhausts, they look terrible.

The car comes with 20inch 5-spoke alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-gloss finish and fitted with 265/45 R 20 high-performance tires. You can also opt for 21-inch rims.

Like every other AMG Merc, the interior is a fantastic place to be in and features standard designo premium leather AMG power sports seats offering excellent lateral support, as well as the four-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel. The AMG Performance Package also includes an engine cover in high-quality genuine carbon fiber, calipers painted in red and the AMG Performance steering wheel in Premium leather/DINAMICA.

Standard equipment includes:

AMG illuminated door sills in stainless steel

AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs

COMAND system with hard-drive navigation & SIRIUS real-time traffic & weather

Following yesterday’s reports on the new naturally aspirated V8 AMG has made for the next SLK55 AMG, Mercedes released official details of this 5.5 liter engine.

It is basically the same as the 5.5 liter biturbo they are using for the full-fat AMG models like the CLS63, or S63. But it is naturally aspirated and therefore weaker at 310 kW (422 hp) and 540 Nm of torque. That is still a very decent amount of power. The main focus however, is on fuel efficiency.

That’s why the 5.5 liter V8 features direct petrol injection and even an advanced cylinder deactivation system. AMG says it is 30 percent more economical than the existing AMG engines with fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100 km. It is also 3.5 liter better than the old SLK55 which had way less horsepower. CO2 figure for this engine is 199 grams per kilometre.

It is of course the cylinder deactivation system in this engine that’s steal the show a bit. The idea is when you are driving at slow speed and don’t really need all that power, this intelligent system – derived from Formula 1 – shuts down four of the cylinders. You still has 230 Nm of torque from the other four but using much less fuel. When you open the taps the other four burst into life again and off you go.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of the system:

AMG Cylinder Management

It is the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system in particular, completely newly developed by Mercedes-AMG, which significantly improves efficiency: cylinders two, three, five and eight are cut off under partial load, which considerably lowers fuel consumption. In similar form this technology is also used in the approx. 750 hp V8 engines used in Formula 1. As efficiency also plays a major role at the pinnacle of motor racing, two or four of the eight cylinders are cut off e.g. when cornering at slow speed, in the Safety Car phases or for pit stops. With a fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre (NEDC combined, provisional figures), the naturally aspirated AMG V8 engine comes in at or below the level of its competitors, however these are unable to match either the output or torque of the SLK 55 AMG – and above all, they do not use large-displacement eight-cylinder engines.

The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode “C” – Controlled Efficiency. The AMG main menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver whether cylinder shut-off is active, and whether the engine is currently running in four or eight-cylinder mode. No less than 230 newton metres of torque is still available in four-cylinder mode – enough power to ensure plenty of acceleration in most driving situations. As soon as the driver has a need for more power and leaves the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are activated. The switch from four to eight-cylinder operation is immediate and imperceptible, leading to no loss of occupant comfort whatever. At an engine speed of 3600 rpm the activation process takes no more than 30 milliseconds.

Other measures to optimise efficiency:

weight-optimised cast aluminium pistons with special piston skirt coating

special ventilation holes in the crankcase

oil pump with electrically controlled pressure stage

separate oil pump for cylinder shut-off as a controllable, low-friction vane cell pump

engine cooling on the particularly efficient cross-flow principle

electronically controlled fuel pressure, fully variable and demand-related between 100 and 200 bar

AMG Private Lounge is kinda like Maybach’s center of excellence, but much cooler. It’s basically a 525 square meters villa in which AMG owners and potential customer can meet, chat about AMG cars, and just have a good time!

I know the idea of sitting with people and talk about cars sound like a dreary activity even for car enthusiasts, but AMG Lounge is such a nice and exclusive club that it’s just cool hanging out in there. It’s got bars and coffee shops and of course AMG Performance Studio where customers can spec up their car with various leather types and colours, paint samples, carbon-fibre, wood or solid metal trim elements, designo items and complete technical components.

Check out the passage below for more details abuot the AMG Private Lounge:

The new multi-storey building is directly reachable from the AMG showroom via an outside staircase, and impresses with its clear architectural lines. In the entrance the visitor is treated to a photographic display of the legendary 300 SEL 6.8 AMG racing touring car on the famous “Eau Rouge” in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium). This work of art consists of individual mosaics arranged in sequence on different levels. Each mosaic consists of individual motifs provided by the members of the AMG Private Lounge Community.

Black and white – homely atmosphere with clear-cut lines

The clear, minimalistic architecture characterises the atmosphere of the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach. Individually produced furnishings in a conical design form a tapering arrangement towards the terrace area. The colour scheme is black and white, with colour contrasts provided by accessories and unique mementos in the display cabinets. The innovative, variable ceiling lighting creates a suitable, homely atmosphere suited to the time of day, season and weather-induced lighting conditions.

The AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach is divided into different areas. The “brand wall” is devoted entirely to motorsports, as is immediately recognisable by the oversized motif of the SLS AMG GT3, which was hand-made by AMG designers. Opposite the “brand wall” is the “lifestyle wall”, where visitors are able to relax or converse. A selection of media such as an iPad and Playstation are provided for individual entertainment. A library with a selection of reference material and coffee-table books is an invitation to quiet enjoyment. The homely atmosphere at the “lifestyle wall” is enhanced by exclusive leather furniture whose design is reminiscent of AMG sports seats with its leather upholstery and contrasting topstitching.

The so-called “Silent Space” located at the centre of the AMG Private Lounge is provided for conversation in a private but informal atmosphere. Next to this is the coffee bar, whose rear face features an impressive, fabric-lined photo motif of the SLS AMG on the Paul Ricard race circuit in Le Castellet (southern France) with its distinctive, coloured run-off areas. The large window area affords a view of the 73 square-metre terrace, where visitors are able to relax and converse in the open air on exclusive lounge furniture.

Regional dishes with a culinary touch

Behind the coffee bar is the dining area, which is partitioned off and enables up to 18 guests to be catered for. The culinary focus is on light dishes with a regional touch. The atmosphere in the dining area is characterised by a large photographic motif, once again of the SLS AMG on the Paul Ricard race circuit, but this time taken against a backdrop of warm evening sunlight. A semi-transparent sunshade in front of the large glassed area allows a view of a freely-arranged garden in the Japanese Zen style.

The various topic areas of the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach are reflected in different flooring designs: parquet, ceramic tiles, different carpeting and wood on the terrace provide a distinctive ambience. All the furnishings to be found in the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach are custom-made for their purpose. With this philosophy AMG reinforces the message of exclusive individuality – a central claim of the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz.

Customer events and press conferences

The AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach is primarily designed to give AMG customers a premium experience of a multifunctional nature. The very latest video and audio technology is available for presentations, multimedia shows and press conferences. An impressive sound experience is ensured by components from Bang & Olufsen. The exclusive AMG cooperation partners are also represented with one-off displays, with Ducati and IWC presenting selected editions and exhibits in the “lifestyle wall”.

New sample room in the AMG Performance Studio

While occupying a separate space, the new sample room in the AMG Performance Studio follows the theme of the AMG Private Lounge. This is where individual automotive masterpieces are created in a direct dialogue with the customer. The practically limitless variety available from the AMG Performance Studio is both visible and tangible in the form of various leather types and colours, paint samples, carbon-fibre, wood or solid metal trim elements, designo items and complete technical components.

AMG Driving Academy Performance Series are short films Mercedes USA has made about the Driving Academy’s activities and courses, so the fans would know the advantages of taking them.

So they’re more of an ad for the Academy, but these films are actually very informative and will teach you some of the basic techniques. Of course to learn the skills fully you are going to have to attend the course.

This episode 1 of AMG Driving Academy Performance Series is a bit boring to be honest, as it’s about seating position. In this one AMG instructor and racing driver Tommy Kendall, who looks more like a Delta Force operator trying to teach you how to handle a machine gun, demonstrates fundamentals such as seat and mirror adjustment, as well as line of sight, which will put you in the optimal position for high-performance driving before you hit the track.

Like I said, boring. But don’t despair, upcoming episodes will involve more sideways action and tire smoke!

Jay Leno paid a one-day visit to AMG HQ in Affalterbach, test drove SLS Roadster and E-Cell, and hand-assembled an AMG V8 engine.

Ola Källenius, chairman of Mercedes AMG gave Jay a comprehensive tour of the company and then handed him keys to the new Mercedes SLS Roadster and an E-Cell concept. Leno also went to the AMG engine shop where he assisted in the assembly of an AMG 6.3 V8 engine for the SLS AMG. He installed the crankshaft, cylinder heads and even the wiring himself, and carried out the subsequent quality tests.

As it’s the AMG tradition, Jay Leno then applied an AMG engine plate bearing his signature to the completed eight-cylinder power unit. Jay made videos of his AMG tour, which will soon become available and we’ll bring them to you.

JL on SLS Roadster: “The SLS AMG Roadster delivers top performance. Whether the engine, transmission, handling or brakes – you feel that the engineers at AMG are serious! When I was 18 or 19 years old I worked for Mercedes-Benz in America. I knew about the test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim from films in which Mercedes sedans like the 220 SE or the 300 SEL 6.3 were driven through the banked curve. I have always wanted to see this for real. It took me over 40 years to do it, but now I’m here! It’s fantastic to drive the latest AMG models here on the test track today.“

JL on SLS E-Cell: “The power delivery from standstill is fantastic. It’s unbelievable how the 392 kW and 880 newton metres catapult the gullwing down the track. Very impressive, especially because you hear nothing except a little wind and tyre noise. And thanks to four-wheel drive, the SLS AMG E-CELL has no problem in bringing its enormous power onto the road. The performance and handling are every bit the equal of the SLS AMG with the V8 engine. This is the future! I have a Baker Electric dating from 1909 in my collection. It’s unbelievable how electric drive technology has developed over 100 years or so!“

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Mercedes-AMG GmbH management board: “I am very pleased that such a passionate automobile fan as Jay Leno has found his way to AMG and Affalterbach. We are quite sure that during his test drives with the SLS AMG Roadster and the SLS AMG E-CELL, we were well able to deliver on our brand claim of “Driving Performance”. And Jay Leno also cut a fine figure as an M159 assembly technician in our engine shop!”

Jay Leno summed up his impressions very positively after his one-day visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach: “AMG delivers unbelievable performance – whether by man or machine!”

One would imagine at AMG they hire wizards instead of engineers, because what they do – turning ordinary and frankly boring Mercedes cars into road-ripping sportscars – is nothing short of magic. AMG is also one of the coolest brands in the automotive world today. Here in this video we get a quick look at the history of AMG from its founding in 1967 to the present day.

Just like the past decade Mercedes AMG has secured the deal to supply Formula 1 with Safety and Medical cars in the 2011 season as well. The SLS AMG and the new C 63 AMG Estate are both on standby for season-opener race in Australia next weekend.

What we quite like about these AMG pace cars is that you hear them over the sound of F1 motors, a sort of baritone background, because of their weapons-grade V8 engines. That’s very cool! The SLS AMG has been used in Formula 1 since 2010. The C 63 AMG Estate is now entering its fourth season, but in 2011 it will appear in a new design with updated technology that includes the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission. AMG has been continuously active in Formula 1 for 15 years.

For 2012 season we are guessing the next SLK 55 AMG or the recently revealed C63 AMG Coupe might become the new Safety car.

Now if you like to learn more about Formula 1 Safety Cars and how different these versions are compared to the standard models, read the passage below:

The SLS AMG Official F1™ Safety Car is sent onto the track by Race Control whenever an accident or poor weather conditions endanger the safe progress of the race. The gull-wing is driven by German racing driver Bernd Mayl?nder (39), who has performed this function for the FIA (F?d?ration Internationale de l’Automobile) since 2000. Mayl?nder is not only on station for Formula 1 weekends, but also for most of the accompanying series such as the GP2 Series or Porsche Supercup.During a race the SLS AMG Official F1™ Safety Car is on standby in the pit lane. Its deployment is decided by Race Control. On receiving a radio message, Bernd Mayl?nder and his co-driver, FIA man Pete Tibbetts (45, from Great Britain), take to the track at the head of the field in order to guide the Formula 1 racing cars safely around the circuit.

Unique vehicle concept for maximum driving dynamics
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has the best possible credentials for this demanding role in the top flight of motor racing: the engine, power transmission, suspension and braking system of the Official F1™ Safety Car are the same as in the standard production SLS AMG. The exceptional technology package for the super sports car ensures perfect driving dynamics and means that no further technical modifications or lightweight design measures are necessary, with the sole exception of the all-new rear silencer, which allows the high-revving AMG V8 naturally aspirated engine to breathe more easily and offers Formula 1 fans an even more emotionally charged sound experience.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine has a peak output of 420 kW (571 hp) at 6800 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4750 rpm, enabling the gull-wing model to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Fast lap times are a matter of course for the Official F1™ Safety Car, otherwise the Formula 1 cars’ tyres and brakes would cool down too quickly, while their engines could overheat.

The unique vehicle concept is a key factor in ensuring outstanding driving dynamics: the aluminium spaceframe body keeps the vehicle weight down to 1620 kilograms (DIN kerb weight). And thanks to the dry-sump lubrication system, the AMG V8 powerplant can be installed very low down, resulting in a beneficial lowering of the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The installed position well behind the front axle, and the transaxle arrangement of the new seven-speed double-clutch transmission on the rear axle, have a positive effect on the weight distribution, which is 47/53 percent (front/rear). Pure motorsport technology is used for the AMG sports suspension: aluminium double-wishbone axles at front and rear ensure outstanding driving dynamics with precise turn-in ability, first-class agility, low mass inertia during fast changes in direction, and therefore high cornering limits.

Double-clutch transmission and ceramic composite brake system
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual-clutch technology features four modes and allows fast gear changes with practically no interruption in tractive power – in manual mode (“M”), gear changes can be effected in 100 milliseconds. Together with the 3-stage ESP®, the integrated mechanical multi-disc differential lock ensures outstanding traction. Meanwhile, braking distances are minimised and resistance to fading is maximised, even when the brakes are subject to typical race-track loads, courtesy of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system with its generously sized ceramic discs measuring 402 x 39 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear. The weight-optimised 10-spoke forged wheels are shod with 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear) tyres.

Aerodynamically optimised roof light bar incorporating LED technology
Compared to the standard-production SLS, the Official F1™ Safety Car is distinguishable on the outside by its prominent F1 logos, carbon-fibre exterior mirrors and the characteristic roof light bar with integrated TV camera. It sits on an all-new carbon-fibre hood whose shape has been tested in the wind tunnel to ensure optimum airflow at the rear aerofoil. The aerofoil pops up when the car reaches 120 km/h, and together with the rear diffuser it provides the necessary rear downforce. LEDs are used for all light functions in the aerodynamically styled roof light bar. Their advantages over the previously used bulbs lie in their extremely fast response time and low power consumption.

The two centrally positioned green lights in the light bar are lit up when the Official F1™ Safety Car joins the field, and must first be overtaken by all the Formula 1 racing cars taking part. Once the SLS AMG has assumed the leading position, the outer orange flashing lights are switched on to signal to the Formula 1 drivers that no overtaking whatsoever is allowed. The white stroboscopic lights in the headlamps and tail lights have a general signalling function, and are always flashing while the Safety Car is deployed. A special number plate at the rear, with “Safety Car” lettering and 700 LEDs, provides additional safety in darkness or wet weather. A rear camera is integrated to the left of the number plate, allowing those in the cockpit of the Official F1™ Safety Car to keep an eye on the Formula 1 cars behind via a monitor.

Practical interior with AMG sports bucket seats
Opening the striking gull-wing doors reveals a functional cockpit which – like the exterior – is only slightly different from the standard model. AMG sports bucket seats with black leather upholstery and six-point seat belts ensure optimal lateral support. To the right of the AMG DRIVE UNIT there are four coloured keys operating the various lighting functions and the signal horn, which is activated for safety reasons when entering andleaving the pit lane. The centre console is of carbon-fibre, as are other areas of interior trim. The AMG Performance steering wheel in leather/Alcantara has a specially contoured grip area, a high-grade metal insert and a 370 millimetre rim with a flattened lower section. The seven gears of the dual-clutch transmission are shifted using the two metal shift paddles.

Two central monitors in the SLS AMG cockpit are used to monitor the progress of the race. To the left and right of the lower monitor are the controls for the radio system, which allows Bernd Maylander and Pete Tibbetts to communicate with Race Control as well as with each other. A second interior mirror lets the co-driver keep an eye on the Formula 1 cars behind. Meanwhile, the “Marshalling System” is integrated in the central display on the instrument cluster and in the lid of the glove compartment: here the driver and co-driver can see exactly the same signals as the Formula 1 drivers in their cockpits. For instance, the various LEDs indicate when yellow or green flags are being waved. LEDs indicating the status of the roof light bar, along with an on-board camera angled towards Bernd Mayl?nder, are mounted at the front end of the dashboard.

New C 63 AMG Estate as the Official F1™ Medical Car
As in 2008 to 2010, the C 63 AMG Estate is the Official F1™ Medical Car responsible for ensuring a rapid emergency response in the event of an accident. The super-fast estate car follows the Formula 1 field during the starting lap, because the race cars are still bunched extremely closely during this critical phase of the race.

The current version of the C 63 AMG Estate will be used for the new season, with state-of-the-art design and engineering. Major new visual features include the aluminium bonnet with modified powerdomes, the radiator grille, the headlamps and the AMG rear apron. To ensure the best possible airflow to the radiator/coolers, the AMG front apron has larger intake apertures and side air vents.

Peak output of 358 kW (487 hp) thanks to the AMG Performance Package
From now on, power is transmitted by the innovative AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with a wet start-up clutch, four driving modes, a double-declutch and a RACE START function. Dynamic performance is guaranteed by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, which now delivers 358 kW (487 hp) at 6800 rpm in the Official F1™ Medical Car. The increase in output versus the standard 336 kW (457 hp) engine is due to the AMG Performance Package, which is optionally available for any C 63 AMG and makes an acceleration of 4.4 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (Estate 4.5 sec.) possible. For the AMG Performance Package the engine specialists have placed their trust in a technology transfer from the SLS AMG: the forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft have been adopted from the gull-wing model. The lower inertia of the three-kilogram lighter components allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev freely and respond even more promptly. Distinguishing features of the Performance Package include the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey and the AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated composite brake discs at the front axle.

Outstanding driving dynamics are also ensured by the adjustable coil-over suspension, the AMG light-alloy wheels shod with size 235/35 R 19 (front) and 255/30 R 19 (rear) tyres, the differential lock and 3-stage ESP®. Maximum durability is provided by the optimised coolant, engine oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid cooling. Invisibly but unmistakably, the characteristic AMG V8 sound issues from the special rear silencers of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Like the Official F1™ Safety Car, the Official F1™ Medical Car is distinguishable by its F1? logos, the roof light bar, and the stroboscopic flashing LED lights at the front and rear. A number plate illuminated with LEDs and displaying the words “Medical Car” on the tailgate makes the car easier to see in darkness or adverse weather conditions.

Plenty of space in the boot for emergency equipment
The Official F1™ Medical Car is piloted by racing driver Alan van de Merwe (31, from South Africa); his co-driver is the official FIA Grand Prix Chief Medical Officer Dr Gary Hartstein (56, from Belgium). Two assisting medical experts from a specially-selected clinic near the race track sit in the rear. Four AMG sports bucket seats with six-point seat belts, two monitors integrated into the centre console for monitoring the race and a radio set for communicating with Race Control distinguish the interior of the Official F1™ Medical Car from that of the standard-production C 63 AMG Estate. There is plenty of space for all the emergency equipment – including a defibrillator and respiration apparatus – in the 485-litre luggage area of the C 63 AMG Estate.

AMG Performance Studio responsible for development
The development, track-testing and configuration of the two Official F1™ Safety Cars and the two Official F1™ Medical Cars – in both cases, there is one emergency vehicle and one replacement vehicle – are carried out by the specialists from the AMG Performance Studio in close collaboration with the test team for AMG overall vehicle development. This involves drawing on over 40 years of know-how from the field of motorsport, as well as the wealth of experience in the design of high-performance sports cars. Numerous test drives were carried out on various racetracks in order to tune the suspension and verify all the systems and components. Two highly-qualified AMG technicians are also on hand to take responsibility for the deployment of the Safety Car and Medical Car at all Formula 1 races in the current season.

AMG has provided the Safety Cars and Medical Cars for 15 years
AMG has extensive experience in the design, development and deployment of the Official F1™ Safety Car and Official F1™ Medical Car. The Affalterbach-based company has been active in the top echelon of international motorsport since 1996.

Latest reports form Stuttgart and Affalterbach confirm that AMG is hard at work developing new type of high performance hybrid engines. It’s not something they naturally want to do of course, as they’re only obsessed with horsepower! But they have to do it to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

AMG’s hybrid program was a very cool one when it was first started. They were going to use hybrid technology like batteries, ultracapacitors and flywheels to actually boost the output of their powertrains even further. But it’s now turned towards lower fuel consumption, and for that they’re considering stop-start and recuperation technology. Mercedes is also working on fuel cell and Chevy Volt-style range extender systems.

Now this being AMG, you may rest assured they won’t let the green efforts cause any damage to the performance of their cars, not even a little!

Mercedes is apparently readying a hot hatch based on the next generation A-Class. They already have the A200 Turbo, which might be hot enough for some people, but this new one will be powered by AMG and will have 320 hp and four-wheel-drive! Plus, the A-Class as we know it has never been a proper hatchback, it’s more of a shopping trolley!

So with that potent engine and AWD system it’s clear that Mercedes is gunning for the Audi RS3 as the main rival, but they can also cause some trouble for the newly introduced BMW 1-Series M Coupe and VW Golf R. What’s more, the new A-Class AMG – allegedly called the A25 AMG – will also look the part featuring a lower wider body which is totally different than current models.

It’ll also feature new platform which the next B-Class will also be based upon. The shape of the next gen A-Class will be previewed on a concept at next year’s Shanghai motor show.

Mercedes-AMG 6.3 liter naturally aspirated V8 has won two more awards, this time at International Engine of the Year Awards 2010, where it’s recognized as the “Best Performance Engine”. It also won the award in “Above 4 litres” category. It’s the second year that this magnificent rumbling V8 beats the competition. It’s a pity though, Mercedes will soon drop it in favour of a more efficient twin-turbo V8.

Press Release

Bearing the internal designation M 156, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with its displacement of 6208 cubic centimetres produces between 336 kW (457 hp) and 386 kW (525 hp), develops up to 630 Nm of torque and features in various AMG models, including the C 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG and the SL 63 AMG. The basis for the agile power delivery is the consistent technology transfer from motorsport, which has been an inseparable part of the company philosophy at Mercedes-AMG for over four decades. The verdict of juror Jason Cammisa from Automobile Magazine (USA): “The absolute epitome of a German hot rod V8 engine!” Carl Cunanan, editor of C! Magazine (USA): For its fantastic engine sound alone it deserved first place!”

The great potential of the award-winning AMG V8 is also reflected in its character-packed, powerful evolution: the engine – dubbed the M 159 – for the SLS AMG super sports car is based on the M 156; in the gullwing the AMG high-revving naturally aspirated engine develops 420 kW (571 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 650 Nm. Another outstanding vehicle is the C 63 AMG with Performance Package Plus and maximum output of 358 kW (487 hp). The overhauled features inside the engine are responsible for the increase in output: the forged pistons adopted from the SLS AMG together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft make the engine three kilograms lighter. The reduced inertia enhances the agility of the eight-cylinder unit, which offers even more exhilarating responsiveness.

Mercedes-AMG beats off established rivals

The “International Engine of the Year Awards” rank among the most prestigious honours in the automotive sector and have been organised by specialist UK publisher, UKIP Media & Events, since 1999. An independent jury of 65 renowned motor journalists from 32 countries chooses the best engines of the year. Following on from the success in 2009, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine also managed to beat off prestigious rivals from Germany, Italy, the UK, USA and Japan this year, enabling Mercedes-AMG to demonstrate once again its consummate expertise in developing and producing exhilarating high-performance engines.

Friedrich Eichler, Head of Engine & Powertrain Development at Mercedes-AMG:
“Our renewed success this year in the two categories is testimony to the out-and-out positive test results for the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine in all the media. The top spots also reflect the great enthusiasm of our customers.”

According to Inside Line, Mercedes and its performance arm AMG will drop the normally aspirated 6.3 liter V8 next year, in favour of a more efficient 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8. That means less displacement for the sake of less fuel consumption, and using turbochargers to make up the lost power. That is exactly what BMW has done for the new M-powered cars. The 6.3 liter itself replaced the old 5.0 liter supercharged V8 some years ago.

Apparently Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, has confirmed this but didn’t specified any number for the new engine’s horsepower. He has also said that all V8 models in the Mercedes range will be fitted with turbochargers.

Now as far as they don’t compromise on power, it’s all good. A powerful and efficient V8 engine is the best of the both worlds! But at the end of the day, these turbo engines wouldn’t sound as good as that rumbling 6.3 liter. That is pure muscle!

Today AMG confirmed their plans to make an all-electric version of the yet-to-be-revealed Mercedes SLS supercar. Like a Tesla, this eDrive SLS AMG is not a hybrid or anything and runs purely on the electricity generated by four electric motors each powering one of the wheels. So you get 392 kW/526hp and 880nm of torque at your disposal which can be used to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in about 4 seconds. And it’s not a concept either! They actually gonna make it, The world’s first electric (real) supercar!

Press Release

Affalterbach – Mercedes-AMG is paving the way ahead: with the new SLS AMG with electric drive, the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz Cars is developing an exciting super sports car with zero-emission high-tech drive. This model sees Mercedes-Benz and AMG displaying their expertise in the development of alternative drive solutions for high-performance super sports cars, delivering further proof of their pioneering status in this market segment.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGwith electric drive transforms the vision of powerful and locally emission-free super sports cars into reality thanks to an innovative drive system: powerful forwards thrust is provided by four electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW and a maximum torque of 880 Nm. The four electric motors are positioned near the wheels, substantially reducing the unsprung masses compared to wheel-hub motors. One transmission per axle transmits the power. This intelligent all-wheel-drive system allows dynamically optimised power transmission without any losses by means of Torque Vectoring – in other words the specifically targeted acceleration of individual wheels. In its first pilot phase, the SLS AMG with electric drive incorporates a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery of modular design with an energy content of 48 kWh and a capacity of 40 Ah. The 400-volt battery is charged by means of targeted recuperation during braking whilst the car is being driven.

Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds
When it comes to dynamics, the electrically driven SLS AMG delivers an unequivocal statement: the swing-wing model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds – putting it on the same high level as the SLS AMG with a 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 420 kW/571 hp.

“With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance,” says Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Optimum weight distribution and low centre of gravity

The purely electric drive system was factored into the equation as early as the concept phase when the new swing-wing model was being developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. It is ideally packaged for the integration of the high-performance, zero-emission technology: by way of example, the four electric motors and the two transmissions can be positioned near the wheels and very low down in the vehicle. The same applies to the modular high-current battery, whose modules are located in front of the firewall, in the centre tunnel and behind the seats. Advantages of this solution include the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and the balanced weight distribution – ideal conditions for optimum handling, which the electrically powered SLS AMG shares with its petrol-driven sister model.

The installation of the drive components required no changes whatsoever to the swing-wing model’s aluminium spaceframe body. And there were just as few constraints when it came to maintaining the excellent level of passive safety and high degree of long-distance comfort that are hallmarks of Mercedes cars.

Strategic alliance for fast electrification of the car
The electrically powered SLS AMG sees Mercedes-Benz and AMGcontinuing to pursue their aim of minimising the amount of time it takes to bring about the electrification of the car. Their strategic involvement in Deutsche Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG, will provide the battery technology required in future. Daimler has the leading role in this joint venture for the development and production of batteries and battery systems for automotive applications.

The S65 AMG with a massive twin-turbo V12 developing 612hp costs you 185,900 Euros. Ouch! Much much more details after the jump…

More details in Mercedes Press Release:

The Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG, the powerful top-of-the-line S-Class models, are now even more appealing: thanks to a series of subtle yet extremely effective fine-tuning measures, the two performance saloons are even more striking and priceless than ever before. The updated technology is aimed at ensuring a more dynamic driving experience as well as optimum active and passive safety.

Exclusivity and dynamism, effortless superiority and high tech – both of the top-of-the-line S-Class models from Mercedes-AMG embody all of these characteristics. Since its market launch some three years ago, the S-Class made by AMG has won the hearts of over 8000 customers around the world – turning it into the undisputed market leader in the small yet highly exclusive high-performance luxury saloon segment. Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMGGmbH: “Our discerning clientele appreciate the synthesis of uncompromising performance and dynamic, exclusive equipment, a unique proposition in this market segment.

We have raised the bar further in terms of driving dynamics, safety and passenger comfort with the extensively updated new series of the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG.”

High-revving V8 engine and effortlessly superior biturbo V12 engine

The S 63 AMG, with its powerful, high-revving 386-kW/525-hp AMG 6.3-litre V8 naturally aspirated engine developing 630 Newton meters of torque, is capable of accelerating to a speed of 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The S 65 AMG, meanwhile, demonstrates even greater superiority: its AMG6.0-litre biturbo V12 engine delivers maximum power of 450 kW/612 hp and maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. Both AMG saloons are electronically limited to 250 km/h. Despite no changes having been made to the engine data and performance values, it has still been possible to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 3 percent.

Contributing to the even more exceptional status of the models is the new, more pronounced arrow-shaped radiator grille, featuring twin chromed louvres in the case of the S 65 AMG. The new front apron incorporates striking, AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights and two transverse air outlets on each side. Further striking features include the “6.3 AMG” or “V12 Biturbo” lettering on the front wings, and redesigned exterior mirrors.

Side sill panels emphasize the elegant line of the front apron through to the rear of the vehicle, where the new rear apron features yet another highlight: the center section of the black diffuser insert is now painted in the same color as the vehicle body. New tail lights with 52 LEDs in the form of a double “C” also give the S-Class an unmistakable appearance from behind. A distinctive element of both models comes in the guise of the AMG sports exhaust with two chromed twin tailpipes, featuring a V12 design in the case of the S 65 AMG. Visual aspects which distinguish the V8 from the V12 model also include the attractive AMG light-alloy wheels: the S 63 AMG has 19-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with 255/40 (front) and 275/40 (rear) tires. The S 65 AMG, on the other hand, comes with 20-inch AMG forged wheels painted titanium gray with a mirror finish and fitted with 255/35 (front) and 275/35 (rear) tires.

Crosswind stabilization, Torque Vectoring Brake and Direct-Steer system

The AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control (ABC) provides crosswind stabilization as standard equipment for the first time: thanks to this function, influences caused by crosswinds are compensated for, or – in the case of strong gusts – reduced to a minimum. ABC compensates against the effect of crosswinds by adjusting the wheel load distribution within milliseconds, using the yaw-rate and lateral acceleration sensors of the Electronic Stability Program ESP®.

Also making up the standard equipment is the new Torque Vectoring Brake: when cornering, brief direct application of the brakes has an effect on the vehicle’s inner rear wheel so that the saloon corners precisely and under control at all times. The Torque Vectoring Brake is an additional feature of the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and not only noticeably improves responsiveness but also active handling safety in critical conditions. The driving experience is further heightened thanks to the Direct-Steer system: with its variable ratio depending on steering angle, it helps to ensure a more direct response when cornering, and therefore more responsive handling – in brief: enhanced driving pleasure at the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG S-Class.

Based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system, the AMG high-performance braking system continues to provide optimum fade resistance, deceleration and sensitivity. The front axle features a double floating brake caliper. This exclusive technology combines the advantages of a sliding-caliper disc brake – reduced heat transfer to the brake fluid and clear advantages in terms of comfort thanks to the brake lining guide mechanism – with the efficiency of an extra large fixed caliper brake.

Extensive range of standard equipment with exclusive flair

The interior appointments are every bit as exclusive as the high-tech package: as soon as its door is opened, the S 65 AMG welcomes the driver with large, animated “AMG V12 BITURBO” lettering in the instrument cluster’s central display. The AMG main menu provides the driver with information about engine oil temperature, current gear range and the battery voltage. In the case of the S 63 AMG, the extensive range of standard equipment includes not only PASSION leather appointments, with natural leather in the seat side bolsters, but also front AMG sports seats with climate control, massage, multicontour and dynamic handling function. The Exclusive PASSION leather upholstery in the S 65 AMG, meanwhile, with its AMG V12 diamond pattern design, exudes an air of even greater refinement. Ample use of trim elements and the AMG-specific analogue clock, featuring an IWC design, are a given in both AMG models. Both the AMGSPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC of the S 63 AMG, as well as the five-speed automatic AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission of the S 65 AMG, are fitted with DIRECT SELECT gearshift. Gear changes are carried out by means of AMG aluminum shift paddles on the new AMG sports steering wheel.

New standards in active and passive safety

In addition, both of the top-of-the-line AMG models set new standards when it comes to active and passive safety through an unrivalled combination of innovative camera and radar-based driver assistance systems. These include the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and the PRE-SAFE®Brakes, which are linked to the proximity regulating radar and intervene independently in the event of an impending accident to act like an invisible crumple zone. Night View Assist with infrared camera also features a novel pedestrian detection system. The pictures from the windscreen camera are also used by the new Speed Limit Assist, available as an option. The Brake Assist PLUS and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control support the driver in the event of emergency braking. The PRE-SAFE®positioning function and NECK-PRO luxury head restraints in the front are now also included as standard.

New infotainment systems, including COMAND APSwith new SPLITVIEW display, which shows different images for driver and front passenger simultaneously, enhance occupant comfort even further. Exclusive optional extras are also available from the AMGPERFORMANCE STUDIO:

20-inch AMG twin-spoke forged wheels, painted in titanium gray with a mirror finish and fitted with 255/35 R 20 front and 275/30 R 20 rear tires (only S 63 AMG)

AMG trim in black piano lacquer/carbon fiber

While the S 63 AMG is available in short or long-wheelbase versions, the S 65 AMG is only available as a long-wheelbase version. Both top-of-the-line AMG models will have their market launches from the end of June 2009.

Engine and drive system: V8 naturally aspirated engine and biturbo V12 engine: high tech from the world of motorsport for unrivalled performance

Powerful eight and twelve-cylinder engines are a traditional strength of AMG – and no less so than with the S 63 AMG and the S 65 AMG, the S-Class top-of-the-line models. The S 63 AMG is powered by a high-revving V8 naturally aspirated engine developing 386 kW/525 hp, the S 65 AMG comes with a biturbo V12 engine that delivers 450 kW/612 hp. Despite no changes having been made to the engine and performance values, it has still been possible to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the two high-performance saloons.

Developing a peak output of 386 kW/525 hp at 6800 rpm and maximum torque of 630 Newton meters at 5200 rpm, the S 63 AMG ranks among the most powerful series-production saloons with an eight-cylinder engine. These impressive figures translate into a high level of driving pleasure and exceptional performance. The S 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds before going on to a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The V8 naturally aspirated engine with its displacement of 6208 cubic centimeters offers an exhilarating mix of high power from low engine speeds, instantaneous responsiveness and pronounced high-revving flexibility – up to a maximum engine speed of 7200 rpm.

Precise fine-tuning of the engine and transmission setup, aerodynamics and rolling resistance has reduced fuel consumption by 0.5 litres/100 km – without compromising driving dynamics. NEDC combined fuel consumption for the new S 63 AMG is now 14.4 litres/100 km (long wheelbase: 14.5 l/100 km), equivalent to CO2 emissions of 344 g/km (long wheelbase: 347 g/km).

AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine: technology transfer from the world of motorsport

The technical basis for the dynamic DNA comes courtesy of the thoroughbred motorsport technology of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine. This includes the lightweight, extra-rigid aluminum bedplate crankcase with closed-deck technology and the twin-wire-arc-sprayed coating on the cylinder walls used exclusively by AMG. The streamlined design of the intake and exhaust ducts together with the magnesium variable intake manifold featuring two parallel-action internal throttle flaps results in superlative cylinder charging and high power output.

The 32 valves in the cylinder heads are operated by bucket tappets for a rigid valve train and high engine speeds. Continuous adjustment of the camshafts on the intake and exhaust sides ensures an optimal supply of fuel/air mixture to the eight combustion chambers.

Figures in brackets refer to long-wheelbase version; * electronically limited.

Electronically controlled fuel supply for outstanding agility

Outstanding agility and instantaneous responsiveness are the undoubted strengths of the AMG6.3-litre V8 engine, thanks in no small part to the electronically controlled fuel supply. It operates with an on-demand system pressure of 3.8 to 5.0 bar. According to power requirements and external temperature, fuel pressure is adjusted and regulated almost instantly. The engine management system translates the command from the accelerator within milliseconds into the corresponding fuel pressure setting. Such control ensures rapid vehicle response and a sporty thrust across all load ranges and at all engine speeds.

In the interests of optimal reliability, the S 63 AMG has a particularly efficient water cooling system and large engine and transmission oil coolers. Located behind the apertures in the AMG front apron, these coolers ensure non-critical operating temperatures at all times – even under the extreme stress of the racetrack. The AMG sports exhaust system with two oval twin chromed tailpipes delivers the telltale eight-cylinder vocals.

S 65 AMG: exclusive effortless superiority

A twelve-cylinder engine has always been the pinnacle of the engine builders’ craft. The V12 powerpack on the S 65 AMG is regarded by engine experts as a prime example of this rare art: thanks to its displacement of 5980 cc, twin turbochargers and powerful air/water intercooler, the AMGV12 delivers maximum power of 450 kW/612 hp between 4800 and 5100 rpm and maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters. The torque has been reduced from 1200 to 1000 Newton meters out of consideration for the drivetrain and is available between 2000 and 4000 rpm. At a mere 1000 rpm, the AMG 6.0-litre biturbo V12 engine delivers 570 Newton meters of torque to the crankshaft, while 750 Newton meters are on tap at 1500 rpm. The performance figures are impressive testimony to the phenomenal power harnessed by the AMG twelve-cylinder unit: the S 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds; the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Key data at a glance:

The S 65 AMG leaves you in no doubt about the effortless superiority of the 12?cylinder engine, kilometer after kilometer: the powerful, effortless acceleration in the highest engine speed range is another strength of the AMG12-cylinder unit along with its relaxed cruising at low engine speeds. Just as impressive as the phenomenal flexibility is the smooth and refined running characteristics which guarantee the high level of touring comfort traditionally associated with Mercedes.

Like its stablemate the S 63 AMG, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on the new S 65 AMG have been reduced thanks to optimization of the engine and transmission setup as well as improvements to the aerodynamics and rolling resistance – all despite no changes having been made to the engine data and performance values. The NEDC consumption of the S 65 AMG is now 14.5 liters per 100 kilometers (CO2: 346 g/km), an equivalent reduction of 0.3 l/100 km.

Know-how from the world of motorsport also with the AMG biturbo V12 engine

The AMG6.0-litre biturbo V12 engine also leverages the vast know-how amassed

by Mercedes-AMG from the world of motorsport. The V12 engine has a precision-balanced crankshaft made out of high-strength materials, forged pistons made out of special material which is extremely resistant to temperature and pressure, a more effective oil-spray cooling system with a separate individual nozzle for each piston plus larger piston pins. The main and big-end bearings are also made out of improved materials to compensate for temperature and pressure peaks more effectively.

The charge cycle in the cylinder heads benefits from optimised combustion chambers and longer opening times of the intake camshafts. A modified oil pump ensures that all lubrication points are supplied with oil – even in highly demanding conditions. An engine oil cooler is integrated into the AMG front apron, with an additional engine coolant radiator located in the wheel arch.

Air/water intercooler for optimum engine efficiency

A typical feature of the AMG biturbo V12 engine is the sophisticated air/water intercooler. A large cooler at the front of the vehicle effectively cools down the intake air – which has been compressed by the turbochargers – before it enters the combustion chambers. The water-cooled low-temperature cooler results in a 25 percent reduction in intake temperature at full throttle and guarantees high power and torque output under all operating conditions and regardless of the outside temperature. The housings of the compressor and turbine in both turbochargers as well as the turbine and compressor wheels have been enlarged, resulting in a maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar.

The electronically controlled AMG-specific fuel supply operates with a variable system pressure of between 3.6 and 5.0 bar. According to power requirements and external temperature, fuel pressure is variably controlled almost instantly. The engine management system translates the command from the accelerator within milliseconds, delivering an extremely fast response from the engine in all load situations. The sports exhaust system with two sets of twin chromed tailpipes in the V12 design provides the telltale AMG twelve-cylinder vocals on the new S 65 AMG.

Engine production at Mercedes-AMG: tradition of hand-built excellence

Traditionally all engines are built by hand at Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach – just like the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine in the S 63 AMG and the AMG 6.0-litre biturbo V12 engine in the S 65 AMG. In the state-of-the-art AMG engine workshops, which were opened in 2002, a highly qualified engineer assembles each engine according to the company’s philosophy of “one man, one engine” in compliance with the most stringent quality standards. The engineer’s signature on the AMG engine plate is testimony to the highest standards of workmanship. It takes around three hours to produce the V8 engine; the V12 unit normally takes somewhere in the region of six-and-a-half hours.

Transmission and power transfer: tailor-made solutions

To match the wide engine speed range of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, the S 63 AMG teams up with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC, while the high-torque S 65 AMG is paired with the AMGSPEEDSHIFT 5-speed automatic transmission. The driver can nudge the DIRECT SELECT shift lever on the steering column to select the transmission settings “P”, “N”, “R” and “D”. In typical AMG style, individual gears can be shifted using the AMG shift paddles on the steering wheel, rather like in a Formula 1 car.

Three different drive modes are available in the two AMG saloons: these shift modes – “C” (Comfort), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) are selected using a switch in the center console and differ in terms of their gearshift characteristics and speed. In the manual “M” mode the transmission reliably remains in the selected gear, enabling the driver to ideally harness the immense pulling power. Automatic downshift under full throttle or during kickdown is similarly prevented as is an upshift when reaching the engine speed limit. This allows drivers with a particularly sporty streak to make even better use of the high power at their disposal. The AMG instrument cluster displays the currently engaged gear and recommended upshifts in “M” mode.

In line with the exceptional 1000 Nm torque, the S 65 AMG comes with a systematically reinforced drivetrain. In the automatic transmission this includes purpose-built clutch plates with a high-quality metallic coating and the modified shift and torque converter logic. Redesigned drive shafts, larger hub carriers as well as strengthened steel spring links supplement these measures.

AMG sports suspension and high-performance braking system: New standard in driving dynamics thanks to Direct-Steer system, Torque Vectoring Brake and Active Body Control with crosswind stabilization The AMG sports suspension and ADAPTIVE BRAKE high-performance braking system are every bit a match for the effortlessly superior drive units: the two top-of-the-line models, the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG, raise the bar in terms of driving dynamics thanks to new high-tech systems.

Less steering effort, more agile handling with the same outstanding straight-line stability – the new Direct-Steer system in a nutshell, which is now fitted as standard on the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG. A key feature of the Direct-Steer system is the variable-ratio steering rack that operates using purely mechanical means. While the power steering around the central position utilises an indirect ratio to promote excellent straight-line stability, this alters from a steering angle of around five degrees: really small steering angles are all it takes to perform precise cornering, noticeably improving handling on winding country roads. The steering angle requirements have also been modified, enabling the driver to steer the AMG saloons far more easily, particularly on urban roads. Compared with a steering system with a constant ratio, the number of revolutions from lock to lock is reduced by around 25 percent with the Direct-Steer system.

Purely mechanical Direct-Steer system with a host of benefits

Another advantage of the purely mechanical Direct-Steer system is the absence of any elaborate actuators and complex sensors – with associated benefits in terms of weight, installation space and susceptibility to faults. The constant steering response is also advantageous compared with other variable steering systems that sometimes require the driver to adapt quickly to what are fast changing situations on the road. The Direct-Steer system is based on the familiar speed-sensitive power steering system which reduces the power assistance as the road speed increases. Easy maneuverability on urban roads where large steering angles and thus a great deal of power assistance is required, is coupled with reduced support at high speeds, say on the motorway – all of which improves straight-line stability and handling safety.

Torque Vectoring Brake optimizes driving dynamics and handling safety

A further improvement in driving dynamics as well as active handling safety comes courtesy of the new Torque Vectoring Brake. If the Electronic Stability Program ESP®detects the onset of understeer, short one-sided braking intervention on the vehicle’s inside rear wheel generates a specific yawing moment around the vehicle’s vertical axis within a fraction of a second. Consequently, the AMG S-Class handles precisely and remains under control at all times as well as also bolstering active handling safety by reducing the tendency to understeer. The Torque Vectoring Brake is standard on the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG.

Crosswind stabilization as new Active Body Control function

The AMG sports suspension now comes as standard with automatic crosswind stabilization based on Active Body Control (ABC). The ABC control electronics

vary the wheel load distribution so that the effect of crosswinds is virtually compensated or reduced to a minimum. If the S-Class is affected by a crosswind, the ABC control unit utilizes the yaw-rate, lateral acceleration, steering angle and speed sensors of the Electronic Stability Program ESP® to trigger diagonal wheel load distribution instantly – for instance on the left front and right rear wheel. The associated steering effect reduces the effect of the crosswind. Crosswind stabilization is activated at speeds above 80 km/h while travelling in a straight line or on slight bends. The function is deactivated if the driver himself makes heavy, brusque steering corrections.

The active suspension on the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG all but entirely eliminates the body movements that occur when moving off, cornering and braking. Bends are negotiated with far less roll; the body roll caused by fast evasive maneuvering is effectively suppressed. Other notable features of Active Body Control are the variable roll moment distribution between the front and rear axles, which the system carries out automatically according to the speed. The computer uses various acceleration sensors to obtain information on the current driving situation and compares this data with those from the pressure sensors in the spring struts and the level sensors on the control arms. The system then computes the control signals that the servo-hydraulic valves at the front and rear axle transform into precisely metered flows of oil. The load adjustment system enables the current vehicle weight to be factored into the calculation processes for the active suspension. As such the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG handle just as dynamically even when the car is fully laden. Briefly pressing the Sport button next to the AMG instrument cluster changes the characteristics of the AMG sports suspension: the roll angle through fast corners is reduced further, the shock absorbers and springs also respond firmer to promote agility. At speeds of between 65 and 100 km/h, ABC automatically lowers the body by as much as 15 millimeters to reduce wind resistance. If more ground clearance is needed when driving on poor road surfaces, the driver can raise the level of the vehicle by 40 millimeters at a speed up to 30 km/h by simply pressing a button.

AMG high-performance braking system based on ADAPTIVE BRAKE

Based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system, the AMG high-performance braking system continues to set the benchmark for stopping power, sensitivity and fade resistance. The front axle features a double floating brake caliper; this technology combines the advantages of a sliding-caliper disc brake – reduced heat transfer to the brake fluid and clear advantages in terms of comfort thanks to the brake lining guide mechanism – with the efficiency of an extra large fixed caliper brake. At the rear, braking is handled by a large sliding frame-type caliper. Internally ventilated, perforated composite brake discs at the front and rear with a diameter of 390 and 365 millimeters respectively ensure the shortest stopping distances, remarkable resistance to fading and outstanding sensitivity.

The hydraulic dual-circuit braking system is controlled electronically, permitting the inclusion of numerous driver assistance functions that improve safety and comfort – such as “priming” the braking system in critical situations: if the driver suddenly switches from the accelerator to the brake pedal before emergency braking, ADAPTIVE BRAKE increases the pressure in the brake lines and applies the pads to the brake discs, so that they can grip instantly with full force when the brake pedal is pressed. In wet weather, the system injects regular, short brake impulses to ensure that the film of water on the brake discs is wiped off and the brakes can work as effectively as possible. This automatic brake-drying function is always activated when the windscreen wipers on the S-Class have been in operation for a certain time; the driver does not notice the finely metered braking impulses.

After the S-Class has been braked to a standstill, briefly pressing the brake pedal a little further is all that is required to activate the HOLD function. The car is then held by the brakes, even if the driver’s foot comes off the brake pedal. In this way ADAPTIVE BRAKE prevents the car from rolling forward inadvertently when stopped at traffic lights or stuck in stop-and-go traffic, and from rolling back when facing a slope. The HOLD function is deactivated automatically when the car moves off.

Eye-catching light-alloy wheels in 19 and 20-inch format

High-sheen 19-inch AMG four-spoke light-alloy wheels painted titanium gray provide the contact between the road and the S 63 AMG. 255/40 R 19 tires are fitted on 8.5-inch-wide wheels at the front, while 275/40 R 19 tires combine with 9.5-inch-wide wheels at the rear. The S 65 AMG comes with 20-inch AMG twin-spoke forged wheels, painted in titanium gray with a mirror finish, measuring 8.5 and 9.5 inches wide. 255/35 R 20 tires are fitted at the front, while 275/35 R 20 tires feature at the rear.

Active and passive safety: Unique combination provides consummate occupant protection

The high safety standard typical of the S-Class is further improved by a unique combination of new camera and radar-based driver assistance systems. Innovations such as Speed Limit Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and Adaptive Highbeam Assist or the PRE-SAFE® Brakes take occupant protection on board the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG to a wholly new level.

A combination of ultra-modern assistance and protection systems turns the AMG S-Class into an “intelligent” partner that can see, feel, respond reflexively and act independently in relation to a perceived danger and so prevent accidents or mitigate their effects. For the first time cameras are also used that are able to look well ahead, monitor the car’s surroundings and interpret typical critical situations. One example is the Adaptive Highbeam Assist (standard for S 65 AMG). This system recognizes oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead with their lights on, and then controls the headlamps to ensure the best possible beam range without dazzling other road users.

As a new feature, Night View Assist Plus with infrared camera (optional) is now equipped with a special pedestrian detection function: as soon as the system detects pedestrians on the road ahead, they are highlighted on the display to make them more readily noticeable.

Lane Keeping Assist is another system that “looks ahead” for even safer driving. The camera on the inside of the windscreen is able to recognize clear lane markings by evaluating the contrasting images of the road surface and the markings. If the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally, the driver is prompted by short vibrations of the steering wheel to correct the situation. Unlike conventional systems of this kind, the Mercedes system is able to evaluate the driver’s activities as well, and can reliably ascertain whether the car is leaving its lane intentionally or not. There is therefore no warning if, for instance, the driver accelerates before overtaking or joining a motorway, brakes heavily or enters a bend.

The images supplied by the windscreen camera are also used by the new Speed Limit Assist, which recognizes speed limit signs in passing and shows the relevant speed limit in the central display (standard for S 65 AMG).

Drowsiness detection on the basis of more than 70 parameters

Thanks to an innovative technology the S-Class has a very sensitive antenna for the attention level of its driver, and can warn him in time when he becomes drowsy. The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system continuously monitors more than 70 different parameters. Once the evaluation electronics recognize the steering behaviour pattern that typically indicates the onset of drowsiness on the basis of information from the highly sensitive steering angle sensor, a warning signal is sounded and “ATTENTION ASSIST. Break!” appears in the instrument cluster. ATTENTION ASSIST is fitted as standard.

“Electronic crumple zone” for maximum occupant protection

Mercedes-Benz has also improved the long and medium-range radar used by the optional Brake Assist PLUS (BAS PLUS) and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control. Mercedes-Benz also offers another radar-based system for the S-Class in the form of PRE-SAFE®Brakes. If the driver is distracted and fails to recognize the immediate danger of a rear-end collision, or the warning signals of an assistance system, this system can intervene and brake the vehicle independently. The S-Class makes use of the latest development stage of this safety system: if the driver fails to react even after automatic partial braking action, the PRE-SAFE® Brakes activate the maximum braking pressure around 0.6 seconds before what is now recognized as an unavoidable accident – an emergency braking action that can significantly mitigate the severity of the impact. The PRE-SAFE® Brakes therefore act as something like an “electronic crumple zone”.

Design and equipment: Exclusive effortless superiority with style

Dynamic, exclusive, self-confident and effortlessly superior – the new S-Class AMG models embody these attributes even more after the precise fine-tuning.
Press Release:

In the coveted “International Engine of the Year Awards 2009″, engines from Mercedes-Benz and AMG were voted the best in three categories. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine carried off two awards: in the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 liters” categories, this high-revving, naturally aspirated engine developing up to 386 kW/525 hp took first place by a wide margin in each case. In the “2 to 2.5 liters” category, the new four-cylinder diesel unit from Mercedes-Benz also took first place by a comfortable margin.

The “International Engine of the Year Awards” are among the most prestigious in the automobile sector, and are presented annually by the British motoring publisher UKIP Media & Events. The best engines of the year are chosen in twelve categories by an independent jury of 64 well-known motoring journalists from 32 countries. This year two engines from Mercedes-Benz and AMG prevailed against stiff competition from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the USA and Japan. This once again demonstrates the great expertise of Mercedes-Benz and the performance brand AMG in the development and production of exciting engines.

For 2009 the winner in the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 liters” categories was the AMG6.3-litre V8 engine. This high-revving, naturally aspirated power unit with a displacement of 6208 cc develops an output between 336 kW/457 hp and 386 kW/525 hp, a maximum torque of 630 Newton meters, and is used in seven AMG high-performance cars such as the C 63 AMG and the SL 63 AMG. The basis for its agile power delivery is a concerted technology transfer from motor racing, something that has been firmly embedded in the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMG for more than four decades. Jury member Bill McKinnon (USA): “Enormous pulling power and the responsiveness of a racing engine, combined with a “Wagneresque” soundtrack – this AMGV8 sets the standard.”

A high performance with exemplary fuel economy is also offered by the newly designed direct-injection four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz. The most powerful variant develops 150 kW/204 hp from a displacement of 2143 cc, with a maximum torque of 500 Newton meters. It is used in both the new E-Class and the C-Class. The C 250 CDIBlueEFFICIENCY Saloon equipped with this engine has a combined fuel consumption of just 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers – showing exemplary efficiency.
This is the latest, and yet the best, rendering of the upcoming supercar by Mercedes called the SLS AMG. A car which features a retro-classic shape reviving the legendary Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing with roof hinged doors, short tail and long bonnet with lots of power under it! SLS AMG has passed extensive tests around the globe and is now ready for debut at this year’s IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September. A year after its launch in 2011, it’ll spawn a roadster version as well.

Unlike Merc’s previous supercar, the SLR, which was a joint project with the British partner McLaren, the SLS is a full blooded Mercedes. It’s not as powerful as the SLR, the 6.3 liter AMG V8 unit in it just turns out 571 hp, but it is light and agile, and best of all it’s got lots and lots of character. And character is what makes a car freezingly cool.

Here’s Mercedes SLS AMG technical data:
