They tried everything, but nothing really worked. And today Saab and all its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy. But they can hold their head up high.

It’s been almost certain that the Chinese will take over Saab, like they did with Volvo, they repay their debts, restart production, and all will be fine.

But the mess Saab has been into since the GM era was so deep, it stopped them from proceeding with the deal. And now with the Chinese out of the picture, there’s really no other way, nothing to hang to.

After having received the recent position of GM on the contemplated transaction with Saab Automobile, Youngman informed Saab Automobile that the funding to continue and complete the reorganization of Saab Automobile could not be concluded. The Board of Saab Automobile subsequently decided that the company without further funding will be insolvent and that filing bankruptcy is in the best interests of its creditors.

It is expected that the Court will approve of the filing and appoint receivers for Saab Automobile very shortly.Swan does not expect to realize any value from its shares in Saab Automobile and will write off its interest in Saab Automobile completely.

So is this really the end of Saab? Apparently so.

God knows how they did it with literally no money at all, but Saab is readying a new 9-3. And it looks good.

The picture above was discovered in a presentation Saab supplied to a potential investor last year. The new 9-3 is said to a very strategic model for the Swedish firm, as the brand’s recovery plan relies heavily on it.

If Saab’s recent deal with Pang Da gets approved by the Chinese government, and everything goes to plan, the new 9-3 should be here by 2013. Along with it Saab is also developing new models in crossover and premium segments.

Based on the sketch above, the new 9-3 with its rakish design is going to scare off dentists and architects, the typical Saab customers! But hopefully it attracts a new, wider customer base and finally gets back on its feet.

We really do hope things work out for Saab this time around.

In the midst of all the misfortunes, finally some good news for Saab. Their 9-5 Sedan 2.8V6 Turbo has been named Car of the Year in Singapore.

I know it’s not much, but when you are inches from death knowing that some people somewhere in the world are still interested in you is certainly flattering.

The annual “Car Buyer’s Guide 2011/2012? ranks all models on sale in Singapore, and the Saab 9-5 was favorably compared with the Audi A6 and BMW 535i in the Executive Sedan class. This shows the people of Singapore have exquisite taste when it comes to choosing an executive saloon, and don’t go for the obvious Merc or Bimmers.

It’s just a pity, the9-5 might soon become history along with the rest of Saab. Or they could be saved, who knows.

We are very happy, says Jonas Hernqvist, Regional Manager for the Asian markets. The markets in Asia are demanding and Singapore especially so, since it so restrictive when it comes to car imports. Therefore it is particularly gratifying and encouraging that the Saab 9-5 is honored in this way.

Even though Saab has secured some Chinese fund to stay in business, it is still struggling, badly. But if it’s any consolation to them, IIHS just awarded Saab 9-4X as a top safety pick!

The big crossover joins Saab 9-5 Sedan which received the same accolade a few weeks earlier. Being a top safety pick the car ha achieved rating of Good, the highest score, in each test IIHS conducts to measure its safety. And the 9-4 managed to do just so with its unique body structure, purpose-designed for a crossover application and free from compromises through adapting an existing sedan or wagon format.

That’s also why the car offers a car like handling. That is also why the car shouldn’t be a very good off-road car. Saab 9-4x entry level price is $34,205 for front-wheel-drive and $48,835 for the 9-4X Aero XWD model.

“To achieve two Top Safety Picks in three weeks is, of course, extremely gratifying,” says Per Lenhoff, Head of Safety Development at Saab Automobile. “Our main priority is always the protection of real people in real accidents, but the IIHS tests are a valuable guide for consumers and it is important for us to achieve good results.”

After the deal with Hawtai collapsed last week, Saab and Spyker announced they will be looking for a new partner in China, and they seem to have found one. They’ve just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pang Da Automobile.

Pang Da is China’s largest publicly traded automobile distributor with over 1100 dealerships nationwide. So does this mean the deal is official? Well not yet, the previous deal with Hawtai showed everything can be broken in the last minute!

But the promises they’ve made in this MoU includes a strategic alliance consisting of a 50/50 distribution joint venture and a manufacturing joint venture (MJV) for Saab branded vehicles as well as for an MJV-owned brand (the so-called ‘child brand’) in China. Saab Automobile will have up to 50 percent in the MJV, with Pang Da and a to-be-selected manufacturing partner owning the remaining shares.

Based on this agreement, Pang da will pay a EUR 30 million payment for the purchase of Saab and another 15 million in 30 days. Additionally, Pang Da will take an equity stake in Spyker for a total amount of EUR 65 million at EUR 4.19 per share.

Here’s more details, facts and figures:

* Spyker, Saab Automobile and Pang Da signed an MoU on the formation of a joint ventures with respect to distribution and manufacturing in the Greater China market, subject to definitive transaction documentation and certain regulatory approvals.
* Pursuant to the MoU, Pang Da will transfer EUR 30 million to Saab Automobile as payment for the purchase of Saab vehicles and an additional EUR 15 million within 30 days for the purchase of additional vehicles depending on certain circumstances.
* Pang Da will take an equity participation in Spyker for a total amount of EUR 65 million at EUR 4.19 per share representing up to 24 percent of Spyker’s outstanding share capital on a fully diluted basis.

The MoU between Spyker, Saab Automobile and Pang Da contains the principles on which the parties will establish a 50/50 joint venture for the distribution of Saab-branded vehicles in China.

The EUR 65 million share subscription by Pang Da will secure Saab Automobile’s medium term funding.

Some of the transactions following the MoU are subject to agreement on definitive transaction documents and certain conditions, which include consents from certain Chinese governmental agencies, the European Investment Bank, GM and the Swedish National Debt Office.

With the receipt of Pang Da’s EUR 30 million initial payment, Saab Automobile aims to come to an agreement on payment and delivery terms with its suppliers as it secured the liquidity that is required to restart production as soon as possible. In order to improve lead times to customers and dealers on existing and future orders, Saab Automobile will work together with its suppliers to minimize any impact from the recent production stop.

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker and Saab Automobile said: “Both parties are confident that this partnership allows Saab Automobile and Pang Da to create a strong business, initially in the distribution and subsequently in the manufacturing of Saab vehicles in China.

“Pang Da is a forward-looking, profitable and well-capitalized public company that, as the single largest automobile distributor in China, sees enormous potential for our brand in their home market. We will work hard to finalize the relevant agreements and firmly establish Saab in the world?s fastest growing car market. Pang Da taking a substantial equity stake in Spyker underlines their confidence in our plans for the future and China in particular.”

Mr. PANG Qinghua, CEO of Pang Da, said: “This partnership allows us not only to distribute Saab, the iconic European premium brand, in China but also to set up a manufacturing joint venture which will further enhance the competitive position of the Saab brand in China.

“With the new products Saab has launched since it became an independent car manufacturer early last year, such as the all new Saab 9-5 and the Saab 9-4X which have been widely acclaimed, and not in the least the upcoming successor to the current Saab 9-3, we believe the timing is perfect for Saab to enter the Chinese market. Our size, financial strength and competence in addition to our ability to move fast will be crucial to Saab?s success in China.

“Having just gone public ourselves three weeks ago, we are delighted to have the opportunity to become a substantial shareholder in Spyker, Saab’s parent. We very much look forward to collaborating with Saab’s management to successfully enter our promising home market.”

Every time Saab is about get up, things go wrong somehow. A couple of days ago we told you about their deal with the Chinese Hawtai Motors which could save the company. But guess what.

They are now reporting that the deal has been terminated, because: “Since it became clear that Hawtai was not able to obtain all the necessary consents, the parties were forced to terminate the agreement with Saab Automobile and Spyker with immediate effect. The parties will continue their discussions about a possible cooperation, however now on a non-exclusive basis,” says Spyker, current owner of Saab.

Saab and Spyker will continue negotiation with Hawtai in hope to arrive at a new deal, but they are also considering other alternatives: “Spyker and Saab Automobile continue to work on securing short and medium term funding. To that end Spyker and Saab Automobile are negotiating equity and debt financing and/or technology licensing with various (strategic) Chinese partners,”

Saab is still tryng to secure a 29 million euro loan from European Investment Bank. Once completed, they will pay debts to suppliers and the production will be restarted.

It’s a shame really. Every time Saab thinks they’re back on their feet, they fall to pits an have to start all over again. Now that Spyker failed to help the Swedish brand, they’re going to China in search of a better future.

They are negotiating a deal with Chinese Hawtai Motor Cars, a specialist in development, sales and export of vehicles and parts. They used to make cars for Hyundai under contract. The deal apparently will also help Spyker, who is also in trouble. So much so that they recently sold the entire supercar business to a British firm. Saab is also lookin for a big investment by the Russian financier Vladimir Antonov, who’s reportedly going to buy Saab’s plants and real estate and lease it back to Saab.

Further details on these subjects are yet to be revealed. Meanwhile Saab continues production as normal, thanks to a EUR 30 million convertible loan Spyker managed to get from Gemini Investment Fund Limited. The interest rate of the loan is 7% per annual and the conversion price is EUR 4.88 per share.

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker and Chairman of Saab Automobile said: “I would like to apologize to our dedicated employees, suppliers, dealers and customers for the disruptions of the past weeks. We will do everything in our power to restore the confidence in our company as soon as practically possible.”

Hot on the heels of launching the all-new 9-5, Saab is introducing a new campaign that allows owners of the older 9-5 model to tart their cars up with factory-provided engine tuning kits, body kits, alloy wheels, cargo items and more at great prices.

Saabs are generally very tough vehicles and last longer than their owners! So there are plenty of the 9-5s aorund still working which can use some revitalization. Designed to ensure optimum functionality, quality and performance, all 9-5 accessories are genuine Saab parts and prices include fitting where necessary.

Saab’s dedicated Owners Area website, an online loyalty club for Saab owners of three years or more, offers members access to all the latest Saab news and offers, as well savings on both parts and labour. The classic 9-5 accessories range is available to view on the Saab GB Owners Area website, visit www.saabserviceclub.co.uk for more information.

David Leighton, Business Development Manager – After Sales at Saab GB comments: “The 9-5 has always been a well-loved model with Saab customers and we thought it would be a great opportunity to celebrate this classic model with customers by holding a 9-5 accessories promotion.

“Revitalising your car with accessories such as new wheels or fine tuning your engine can really breathe new life into the performance of your car and the driving experience, whilst customising your boot space or adding handy items such as tow or roof bars, can really help personalise your car to suit your lifestyle.

If you didn’t believe that Saab is fully back on its feet again, here’s the proof! They’ve created this awesome concept to say that not only they’re back in business, they’re more powerful than ever. Thanks to Spyker.

The Saab PhoeniX Concept revealed at Geneva Motor Show is inspired by the brand’s roots in aviation industry and introduces the ‘aeromotional’ design: a visual evocation of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that inspired the creators of Saab’s first car, the iconic Ursaab.

The aerospace inspiration is clear to see with the jet canopy-inspired glasshouse. This design has an exceptionally low drag co-efficient of just 0.25cd and also explores the potential for airflow management through the use of distinctive, side-mounted ‘winglets’. The 2+2 cabin also features butterfly doors and has a minimalist, ‘stripped out’ feel, including a new expression of Saab’s driver-focused layout and a world debut for Saab’s innovative IQon infotainment and communications system.

The Phoenix is based on a new architecture which will underpin the next Saab 9-3 model. Its design and technical features will inspire future models as well.

The car’s is powered by a hybrid system with an electrically-driven rear axle mated to a sophisticated 200 hp, 1.6-litre petrol turbo engine driving the front wheels. That makes it an all-wheel-drive with projected eco figures of 56.5 mpg and 119 g/km CO2.

More details on the Saab Phoenix concept provided in the press release below:

Aeromotional design

The PhoeniX’s ‘aeromotional’ design theme is inspired by Saab’s aviation roots and draws expression from Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned Saab’s first generation of cars.

The entire form of the PhoeniX is seemingly moulded by the wind. Tightly-wrapped by a liquid-like skin, the teardrop cabin resembles a dark ice block and appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork. Two prominent ripples flow along the hood into the disguised windshield pillars, as if barely able to contain a powerful structure underneath.

At the rear, the dark screen also bursts through the outer skin of the rear deck, The tapering form hints at the teardrop rear styling of Ursaab, while the ‘sawn off’, kamm tail echoes a form from Saab’s first coupé, the Sonett.

The low, frontal styling features a stretched interpretation of Saab’s signature three-port grille. A body-colored central wing is now dominant and, in keeping with the car’s minimalist design, LED headlamps are almost invisibly located at its tips. The new grille and bonnet forms are among the styling themes likely to be seen in future Saab production cars.

Butterfly-opening doors provide enhanced access to the low-slung cabin. There are no visible door handles or mirrors to disrupt airflow, and small cameras on slim stalks provide rearward vision.

Roof-mounted ‘winglets’ enable PhoeniX to cleave the air as efficiently as possible. They channel airflow from the side of the car and direct it across the rear deck, reducing lift forces for greater stability without increasing drag.

Minimalist interior

In true Scandinavian tradition, the 2+2 cabin adopts a clean, minimalist look. It has the ‘stripped out’ feel of a competition car, with shell-like seats and metalised interior sections that mimic the exposed network of a rollover cage.

Fresh expression is given to Saab’s traditional, driver-focused instrument layout. A circular pod in front of the driver, shaped like the afterburner of a jet engine, presents data in tandem with the head-up display.

Angled at 45º to the driver, a separate module accommodates Saab’s advanced IQon infotainment and communications system. For good ergonomics, the 8-inch colour touch screen is as close to the driver’s finger tips as the steering wheel.

Saab IQon (see separate release for full details) is a ground-breaking car communications platform using Google’s AndroidTM operating system. Based on pioneering ‘open innovation’ with third-party service providers and applications developers, it comprises an embedded computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet when the car’s ignition is switched on. The touch-screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board music storage and smartphone-like downloading of applications.

Red illumination for all instrument and ambient cabin lighting brings warmth and emotion to the cabin. This includes the floor, where LED light tubes are exposed by perforations in the black carpeting. It is all part of the new ‘aeromotional’ design strategy, incorporating ‘fire and ice’ effects.

The PhoeniX’s curvaceous rear deck disguises a deep-opening tailgate. It gives access to a flat cargo deck, including fold-flat rear seatbacks and a cargo track for adaptable load carrying.

Efficient propulsion

Under its sculpted bonnet and beneath its cargo deck, the PhoeniX advances Saab’s rightsizing powertrain strategy. Its propulsion system combines a highly efficient, 1.6-litre turbo engine driving the front wheels with innovative, electric rear wheel drive technology.

The compact, all-aluminum petrol engine produces 200 hp (147 kW) and includes variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. A stainless steel tank is fitted, which is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design,

The engine is supported by Saab’s innovative eXWD system. It comprises a rear drive unit housing a 25 kW (34 hp) electric motor/generator powered by a small battery pack. Regenerative braking is used to sustain the battery’s charge.

Currently under development for the next generation of Saab cars, this hybrid propulsion system enables the benefits of all-wheel-drive while also reducing fuel consumption. Using a six-speed manual transmission, projected combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are 56.5 mpg and 119 g/km.

The driver can select one of three eXWD operating modes. The default Eco mode delivers optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the petrol engine at low speeds; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.

Inside and out, the Saab PhoeniX showcases new design directions and technologies that will be part of forthcoming Saab products.

The new Saab 9-5 SportWagon and the SportCombi as shown in the video below are among the most exciting cars the Swedish car maker will bring to the show. The 9-3 MY12 line-up also includes some fascinating models including the special Independence edition.

But the absolute highlight of Saab’s stand at the Geneva show will be the new concept model that shows what the future models will look like. Conceived by a team under new Saab Design Director Jason Castriota, the concept’s sleek visual execution introduces styling themes drawn from Saab’s unique Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired design heritage. Cutting-edge technologies include all wheel drive with an electrically powered rear axle and a ground-breaking car communications platform using the Android operating system.

World Premiere: New Saab 9-5 SportWagon

Sharing the limelight, but no less important, the much awaited Saab 9-5 SportWagon also makes its world debut. This five-door partner for the new 9-5 Saloon will offer a compelling alternative choice in the large wagon segment and, in the UK, is expected to sell in even greater volumes than its four-door peer.

Launch of Saab 9-3 MY12 range

The 9-3 range is revitalised with the introduction of the 9-3 MY12 line-up, replacing current Saloon, SportWagon, Convertible and 9-3X specifications. It includes refreshed exterior and interior styling, backed by more powerful, fuel-efficient engines. The new petrol turbos feature direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and twin scroll turbocharger. Further fine tuning enables a remarkable 119 g/km CO2 and 62.8 mpg combined cycle fuel consumption for the SportWagon with 180 hp twin turbo diesel power.

Saab 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition

Saab is celebrating the first anniversary of its independence by unveiling an exclusive 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition, of which just 366 examples will be produced of which only 80 will be available in the UK. Sharing the 9-3 MY12 enhancements and based on Aero specification, it has a unique, Amber Orange metallic paint finish, a limited edition serial number etched into the rear side windows, distinctive interior trim and comprehensive standard equipment.

Saab confirmed debut of the long-awaited 9-5 SportWagon at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, releasing the initial details of the car. The estate version of the 9-5 sedan looks pretty much the same as that, apart from the rear compartment obviously. It makes a good looking station wagon overall.

Saab realized the first thing customers want to know with a estate car is its ability to carry things! So the new 9-5 SportWagon is very well equipped for that. Smart cargo handling features include an adaptable multi-fold floor, flexible U-rail load space configuration and under-floor stowage with a sealed wet storage compartment. A programmable, powered tailgate is also available. It offers 527 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up, expendable to 1,600 liters.

For ease of loading, the tailgate opens down to bumper level with a lift-over height of only 648 mm. The cargo deck floor is also flush with the tailgate opening to facilitate sliding heavy loads inside. A down-lighter in the tailgate and small sidewall lights provide excellent illumination of the load space at night.

2012 Saab 9-5 SportWagon gets the same all-turbo petrol and diesel powertrain line-up as the 9-5 saloon and can also be ordered with Saab’s XWD all-wheel-drive system and advanced features such as: Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis control, adaptive cruise control (late 2012), Bi-Xenon SmartBeam adaptive lighting, keyless entry and starting, tri-zone air conditioning and a Head-up Display which projects information, aircraft-style in the windshield.

Saab will start taking orders for the 9-5 estate from Spring 2011, but the first deliveries won’t arrive until September. This car is Saab’s next step in the biggest new product offensive in its history of the brand.

“The launch of the 9-5 SportWagon is a much-awaited next step in the roll-out of our new product offensive,” says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson. “It will take Saab back into the large estate segment where we have established a strong presence in many key markets with our previous offering.”

Britain is one of the key markets in Europe for Saab, which is why they are treating the customers there with a specially upgraded version of the new 9-5 sedan with no change in pricing. The model is based on the Vector SE trim level and features leather trimmed seats as standard, replacing the previous leather and textile interior trim.

What’s more, they offer a set of 18 inch Carve alloy wheels, improving the aesthetic appeal of the car, replacing the regular 17 inch Blade alloy wheels.

In addition to the new wheels, they’ve also tweaked the chassis to enhance the dynamics and comfort. The previous sport chassis fitted as standard has now been replaced with a revised comfort chassis specification, so you get a sweet ride with the 2.0-litre TiD 160PS models equipped with manual transmission.

Jonathan Nash, Saab GB Managing Director, said: “These improvements are the result of feedback from the UK automotive media. The improved driving characteristics address issues related to ride comfort on UK roads. The fact that the engineering team have managed to make the changes without affecting the impressive CO2 emissions of just 139g/km for the manual 2.0-litre TiD 160PS car show that the small independent Saab engineering team can respond very quickly to market requirements. Coming so soon after the launch of the MY11 9-3 1.9-litre TTiD engine range (all manual saloons emit just 119g/km) shows that Saab are rapidly developing a leadership position in the field of high performance vehicles with low CO2 emissions.”

Saab, loaded with Spyker money, is now confident enough to finally bring out its crossover as a production model. The Saab 9-4X is being prepared to hit the market in May and August (depending on the market) next year as a 2012 model, entering one of the most fierce segments in business. The 9-4X looks quite good if you look at it as a Saab, but as a sporty crossover, well, we’ve all seen better!

Making its world premiere at the 2010 Los Angles Auto Show, the 9-4X offers car-like performance and a bit of off-road capabilities thanks to aab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system, Saab XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive, electronic control.

You get 8-way electrical adjustment for the driver and an optional electrical adjustment of the foot pedals, 60/40 split rear seats, Ample onboard storage includes double-decked pockets in all doors, a two-tier front glovebox and a deep bin in the center console with 12-volt, USB and AUX connections.
Infotainment includes two audio options, a seven-speaker or top-of-the-line, 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound. The optional 8-inch touchscreen, hard disk-based navigation system includes a bird’s eye map view and 10 GB storage for ‘jukebox’ music files. Communication on the move is supported by an integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone system, which functions via voice command and steering wheel controls, as well as the infotainment panel.

In the rear, passengers can enjoy independent climate control, in addition to the standard dual-zone system, and select their own onboard audio/visual entertainment through a dedicated unit in the back of the center console.
Apparently Spyker is very determined to make up the money they spend on buying Saab. And they’re still investing in the company in hope to arrive at great results. So when they needed some engines for the new models, they chose one of the best names in business, BMW. Based on their agreement, the Bavarian company will supply new 1.6 liter 4-cylinder turbo engines with latest fuel savings technologies for Saab’s new model series. They have not disclosed any financial or contract volume details.

“We are continuing to expand our powertrain system sales business worldwide as planned as part of our Strategy Number ONE. Today’s agreement marks another important milestone along this route,” explained Robertson. “We are delighted to support Saab with our engine expertise. Our engines have a clear lead over the competition when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and performance,” Robertson added.

“It gives me great pleasure to confirm this exciting new relationship. BMW Group’s engines and their fuel savings innovations are widely regarded as a benchmark in the premium segment. We look forward to integrating this technology into our next-generation vehicles in a true Saab way,” noted Jonsson.

The engine, which will feature Start-Stop and other measures designed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, will be assembled at the BMW Group’s Hams Hall engine plant in the UK.

Like all the other manufacturers, Saab too is trying to develop their own all-electric platform. And they are taking the first steps with this, the ePower concept based on the Saab 9-3 estate. To be revealed at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, the ePower is the prototype for a test fleet of 70 vehicles which will participate in extensive field trials in Sweden in early 2011.

The car is co-developed by between Saab Automobile, Boston Power (batteries), Electroengine in Sweden AB (electric power trains), Innovatum (project management) and Power Circle (Sweden’s electric power industry trade organization).

It’s powered by a 135 kW/184 hp electric motor driving the front wheels through a single-speed transmission. The motor is backed by powerful 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is accommodated in a modified floor-pan, in the same space that a regular 9-3 houses the exhaust system and fuel tank, so there’s no difference between the cars in terms of space and weigh distribution.

As for the performance, even though it’s yet to be measured in real world, Saab claims zero to 100 km/h acceleration in just 8.5 seconds, and top speed of 150 km/h. Saab 9-3 ePower’s projected driving range of approximately 200 kilometers.

The ePower comes with a new version of Saab’s own in-house Trionic 8 engine management system, with new software written for an electric vehicle application. It also has Electro-hydraulic power steering. Inside the cabin, a conventional, automatic-style gearshift lever provides selection of ‘drive’, ‘neutral’, ‘park’ and ‘reverse’. The rev-counter, fuel and turbo boost displays in the main instrument cluster are replaced by read-outs for battery status, power consumption and driving range, all illuminated in green. To optimize space, an electric park brake is fitted.

Extensive user trials

Hundreds of drivers and their families will be enlisted by Saab and its development partners during a extensive test driving and evaluation program involving a 70-strong fleet of Saab 9-3 ePowers in central, west and eastern Sweden during 2011-12.

The Saab ePower project team in Trollhättan will monitor the performance of the cars across a wide variety of usage patterns and driving conditions. To log essential component data, all vehicles will be equipped with aircraft-style, black box recorders.

“This program is designed to evaluate the potential for developing a high performance, zero emission electric vehicle and is an important next-step in the extension of our EcoPower propulsion strategy,” says Mats Fägerhag, Executive Director, Vehicle Engineering at Saab Automobile, “This includes engine rightsizing, which exploits Saab expertise in turbocharging, as well as the use of alternative fuel, such as bio-ethanol through Saab BioPower technology.”

Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile’s CEO adds: “By 2015, annual global sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach 500,000 units and Saab is determined to be represented in this important, growing segment. The Saab 9-3 ePower program is our first step towards developing a potential production vehicle that will deliver the sort of advanced performance our customers expect. We now look forward to working with our technical partners in developing such a product.”

The latest edition of Saab 9-3 get new highly efficient diesel engines with different power levels and astonishing Co2 emission ratings. all 9-3 diesel engines have more advanced twin turbocharged engines and, in the saloon, all three engines give CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km and great fuel consumption of 62.8 mpg.

Even the SportWagon and Convertible variants deliver great results with 61.4 mpg and low CO2 emissions of 122g/km and 54.3 mpg and 137g/km receptively. The 1.9-litre diesel line-up now comprises a 130 hp TTiD unit (replacing the previous 120 hp TiD engine), a 160 hp version (replacing the 150 hp TiD engine) and a range-topping 180 hp/400 Nm variant.

To achieve this class-leading fuel consumption and emissions standards, Saab engineers have implemented a number of tricks including:

Recalibrated engine management with improved fuel injection and combustion control

Revised gear ratios to match new power and torque characteristics

Improved electrical power management, including sophisticated alternator control when battery charging is not required and more efficient electro-hydraulic power steering assistance

Low rolling resistance tires for reduced road friction

Improved aerodynamics, with rear underbody deflector blades

Reduced weight through lighter construction and sound-deadening materials

Revised torque converter for automatic transmission with optimised shift programming.

Standard Equipment Enhanced for MY11

In addition to the significant powertrain improvements, standard equipment levels have been increased for MY11. All 9-3 models now come with Bluetooth phone integration and heated front seats as standard. Other model year enhancements include the introduction of a ‘change-up’ indicator in the instrument cluster to encourage economical driving; a clutch interlock system on manual transmissions; child seat top tether anchorage points and a perforated leather sport steering wheel on Aero models. Two new exterior paint colours have been added to the range – Diamond Silver and Java and rear engine badging has been changed to follow the same style as used on the new 9-5 saloon.
