Edition 35 celebrates the 35th anniversary of the hot hatch daddy, Golf GTI. Volkswagen says it doesn’t mean the car is having a midlife crisis! Far from it actually…

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 235 PS (25 more than the standard GTI) and 300 Nm (221 lbs ft) of torque, the car is more alive and stronger than ever. Standstill to 62 mph takes 6.6 seconds and top speed is 153 mph, while the average fuel consumption remains a very reasonable 34.9 mpg on the combined economy cycle.

As for the unique features of this edition, bespoke exterior styling changes include a more sporty bodykit incorporating new side skirts and a revised front bumper which sits below bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. Unique lightweight 18-inch ‘Watkins Glen’ alloy wheels, finished in ‘Dark Steel’ or – at no additional cost – silver, distinguish this model from the standard GTI, along with an Edition 35 badge on the front wing, gloss black door mirror casings, rear windows with 90 per cent tinted glass and rear tinted LED lights.

For those who might think the Edition 35 Golf GTI is not ‘special’ enough, tuner B&B has a kit that might be satisfying.

The car is obviously distinguished over the normal GTIs, what with the new tailpipes, diffuser, side skirts, BB stickers, wheels and other aero parts. But where it’s really different than the standard GTi is under the bonnet.

The tuner offers three stages of engine tuning. The first one offers 310PS and 420Nm, and includes bigger turbocharger, intercooler, sport exhausts, ECU remap and oil cooler. The second plan offers 326PS and 450Nm by increasing the turbo boost, and the third plan will be good for 362PS nad 510Nm. The modifications on the last one is a bit deeper and includes optimized turbo, intercooler and exhausts.

Obviously you do want to get the most powerful version, but that program is very expensive at €8950. Stage 2 costs €2798 and stage 1 €1198. If you want to spend even more you can order suspension and braking system upgrades as well.

Volkswagen is still reluctant to join the horsepower war in the hot hatch segment, and is preparing only a mild power boost for the next generation golf GTI.

The current 2.0 liter turbo four-banger will be get a light tweak up to 220 bhp. Instead of adding loads of power to their car, like Ford and Opel do, VW is seeking performance through lightness and precise engineering. So the next-gen GTI will feature a new type of electronically-controlled locking differential that makes the best of that 220 horses.

Fighting off cars like Ford Focus, or Vauxhall Astra OPC is a job for the Golf R. The R Golf will soon get a cabrio version as previewed a the Worthersee event earlier this year. They get the 261 bhp turbo four-cylinder, and while it’s good power, it is still no match for the 300+ hp Fords.

One other significant change that will affect the Golf lineup is the modifications VW is going to make to the 1.4 liter twin-charged engine. It apparently loses its supercharger and will rely on its turbocharger alone to make 150 hp. There has been some complaints about this engine’s smoothness. Well, this change should solve the problem!

Each year at Worthersee event fans of Golf GTI form a big meeting to share their passion by having lots of beer and barbeque, and of course talking about GTI stuff! This year Volkswagen is treating them by making the Golf GTI Edition 35, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the hot hatch. This 235 hp model is the most powerful version of the car to date and features unique features as well. While that’s the highlight of the show, there’s more going on about GTI at Worthersee that you can learn about after the jump.

And make sure this awesome promo video if the Edition 35. Apparently it makes parts of your body tingle!

They are on the road again: at Worthersee, fans of sporty Volkswagens are assembling for the biggest Golf GTI Meet in the world (1 to 4 June). Yet, this time everything is different, because the festival of superlatives is taking place for the 30th time in 2011. And that is not all: the Golf GTI itself – the icon of sporty compacts – has just turned 35! 30 years of the GTI Meet and 35 years of the Golf GTI – a double anniversary. And it is being celebrated in a special way. The highlight: the Golf GTI Edition 35, specially developed for the anniversary – at 173 kW / 235 PS the most powerful GTI ever! The “anniversary GTI” can be ordered now.

In addition, car racing is taking special honours at Worthersee: Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH is bringing the Golf24 – the 324 kW / 440 PS all-wheel drive Golf that will compete in this year’s 24-hour race at the N?rburgring (23 to 26 June). Because the GTI is celebrating a birthday, a second Golf race car, presented to fans in a debut at Worthersee too, will enter the competition at the ring as well. It is: a freshly restored Golf GTI 16S Group 4 of the year 1977. From just 1,600 cm3 displacement, its Oettinger engine transfers a remarkable 158 kW / 215 PS to the crankshaft – without turbocharger breathing. This GTI classic will race in the 24-hour Classic (3-hours for distance) that is held before the main event.Golf GTI Edition 35: The most powerful Golf GTI outputs the cited 235 PS (25 PS more than the “normal” GTI) and can move at 247 km/h; 6 kg/PS power density speak a sporty language. Volkswagen was by no means satisfied with simply increasing the power of the production engine. Rather, the Golf GTI Edition 35 utilises the engine of the all-wheel drive Golf R, its power adapted to the front-wheel drive. What a success story! Back in the summer of 1976 – when the very first production GTI was launched – no one ever would have surmised what Volkswagen had just unleashed: that there would still be a Golf GTI 35 years later; that the power would handily exceed 200 PS; and that nearly two million Golf GTI would be sold by today. That is because icons cannot be planned – and the GTI certainly is one.

Now, in 2011, the new Golf GTI Edition 35 is proving the potential of the GTI idea. The car offers nonstop road grip thanks to its XDS electronic differential lock. An optional 6-speed DSG handles gear-shifting in fractions of a second. The Volkswagen converts each and every one of its maximum of 300 Newton metres of torque into forward propulsion. After just 6.6 seconds, the GTI passes the 100 km/h mark. Sporty performance and fuel economy are not contradictions here – and that is how it has always been with the GTI. The standard fuel consumption of the exclusive Golf GTI Edition 35 is just 8.1 l/100 km; shifted by DSG, fuel consumption even improves to 8.0 l/100 km. This makes the Golf GTI Edition 35 one of the most fuel-efficient sports cars in its power class. Starting price: 30,425 euros.

Golf GTI 16S: The key facts about this car show that it is in a league of its own, and not just in the realm of classic cars: 1,600 cm3 of displacement generates 158 kW / 215 PS; that represents a power per litre displacement figure of 134 PS! With Volkswagen support, the specialists at KWL Motorsport of Burscheid have rebuilt the GTI. It is equipped with such features as a Billstein chassis, sequential 5-speed racing gearbox from Volkswagen Motorsport and an 80-litre fuel tank. Over the past two years, KWL Motorsport has created quite a stir with two class victories at the 24h classic at the N?rburgring – in the first generation Scirocco. This time, motorsport experts are entering the Golf GTI 16S of the year 1977 in Group 4 competition for engines with up to 2.0 litres displacement – once again with the driver duo Patrick Simon and Heinz St?ber who were victorious in 2009 and 2010. Their clear goal: a third consecutive class victory for Volkswagen!

Golf24: In the Golf24, Volkswagen is bringing a legend back to the 24-hour race. The 324 kW / 440 PS all-wheel drive car is a new design from the ground up that was developed right on time for the anniversary of the production GTI. Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen: “What our engineers and technicians have put on wheels for the 24-hour race is best described by the word Super Golf.” In fact: the Golf24 is powered by a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine.” Dr. Donatus Wichelhaus, Director of Engine Development at Volkswagen Motorsport: “We scrutinised every detail of the base engine and re-engineered it.”

When it came to the running gear, Volkswagen engineers called back on the layout of the Scirocco GT24-CNG and radically developed it further; Volkswagen Motorsport 2010 scored a three-fold victory with the Scirocco. The chances are good that this year the Golf24 will continue this string of successes: three Golf24 race cars will start – with top-class drivers such as Volkswagen drivers Ren? Rast and Peter Terting, DTM veteran Edoardo Mortara and Formula-1 legends Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundel. 35 years ago, no one would have guessed that a Golf GTI would be driven by Formula-1 professionals. Those who want to see the Golf24 up close before the 24-hour race should head out to Worthersee. But they will have to hurry – about 200,000 fans are already on their way…

This little bastard you see here is the baby of Jeremy Freedman who is a Golf GTI enthusiast. And a dead serious one as it turns out, because his GTI has a colossal 800-hp output which gives it an officially recorded at Texas mile top speed of 208.1 mph! His car is a Mk III 1997 Golf GTI powered by a modified VR6 engine, which also features some deep changes in terms of drivetrain. It’s all good, but going 208 mph in such a tiny box must be quite scary!

Apart from the LSD doors, massive body kit, big wheels and carbon bonnet and hatch, this Golf also features WEITEC SPORT F-springs, which bring the GTI 20 millimetres closer to the ground. They along with stronger springs and the GT-dampeners will come in ULTRA GT package for 525 Euro.

Furthermore WEITEC-coilovers suspension set reduce the height of the VW by 10 to 40 millimetres. This comes with HICON GT suspension pack featuring a dampening characteristic specially developed for the GTI, and costs 749 Euro.

The most sporty package is WEITEC-coilover HICON TX “plus” which allows the driver to adjust the dampener characteristics in the installed state in terms of its hardness, but costs 999 Euro!

As promised VW revealed the Excessive Concept based on the Golf GTI at the 2010 Wörthersee tour in Austria along with the limited editoin Golf GTI Adidas. The GTI Excessive as its name suggests is a GTI with a massive body kit. VW says that this car’s reflect on the GTI’s design potential, and that the discrete GTI can also get naughty sometimes!

The kit on this GTI consists of a number of add-on parts bolted on the standard car. They include a front splitter, bigger air intakes, new grille, smoked front and taillights, side skirt, fender flares, and a massive rear diffuser accommodating the new tailpipes.

Even though the GTI Excessive is a concept, but according to VW if the fans liked it they will put these add-ons in the GTI’s accessories catalogue.

This year at Austria’s most important motoring show, Wörthersee Tour, VW is going to unveil two special Golf VI GTI models.
The Adidas Golf GTI is limited to 4410 units, so not that limited after all!

The seconds one is more interesting. It’s called the GTI Excessive concept and comes with a wide body kit including massive front splitter and rear diffuser, and new side skirt which in combination with the sport suspension and wider tracks, give the GTI a killer look. New 19-inch black colored wheels complete the aggressive style of this special GTI.

Both models are apparently powered by the same 207 hp and 280 Nm of torque four-cylinder turbo as the standard Golf GTI.

The undisputed champion of all hot hatchbacks is making its way to the American market for 2010, where most of people still don’t get the appeal of a fast small car mainly because they are too fat and can’t get into them! With its 200 hp, the GTI might not be the fastest, the most beautiful or the most affordable hot hatch out there, but it has one big advantage over all of its opponents, it’s a Golf!

Golf GTI is easy noticeable over regular Golfs thanks to its sporty styling cues some of which derived from the original MK-I GTI. The car sits lower than standard, has low profile sport tires wrapped around 17-inch (18-inch optional) light alloys. It also features sport bumpers with big air intake and a spoiler at front, and a big rear diffuser at the back along with a pair of chrome tailpipes.

Inside the car is also upgraded with a well sporty soul! You get sport steering wheel, aluminum decoration, Heavily bolstered front seats that are wrapped in patterned sport fabric with red and white doublestitching throughout and come standard with eight-way manual adjustment, adjustable lumbar support and head restraints. They are also heated. GTI also has no shortage of equipments and fancy safety technologies.

2010 GTI comes with standard with a collection of safety features and enhancements, including a three channel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Anti-slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Engine Braking Assist (EBA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP®). Like all 2009 model year Volkswagens ESP comes standard on all 2010 model year vehicles, ahead of the U.S. government’s mandate that by 2012, all vehicles produced will need to have some form of Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Producing 200 horsepower at 5,100 rpm, and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from 1,800 all the way up to 5,000 rpm, the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s 2.0-liter engine is prepared to take to the road with force. With the standard six-speed manual transmission, the Volkswagen Golf GTI can go from a zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, and on to an electronically limited 130 mph top speed. Power delivery remains smooth and direct across the rpm range, allowing for a swift, 7.5 second run from 37 to 62 mph in fifth gear, and finishes with a redline of 6,500 rpm. In terms of fuel economy, the 2.0T engine and six-speed manual transmission deliver an EPA-estimated 31 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in city driving.

The 2010 GTI comes standard with 24-hour Roadside Assistance for three years or 36,000 miles (whichever occurs first), plus the following new vehicle warranties:

Five-year / 60,000 mile (whichever occurs first) Powertrain Limited Warranty

Three-year / 36,000 mile (whichever occurs first) New Vehicle Warranty

12-year unlimited distance Limited Warranty against corrosion perforation

You might criticize the GTI for being underpowered in comparison to the other hot hatches in the market, but remember it’s how you use the power that matters the most. And Golf GTI use its power in the most efficient way! After all a hot hatchback is supposed to do everything well, not just one thing, GTI is a great example of a brilliant all-rounder.

If you didn’t like the looks of Abt Golf GTI but fancy its extra power, do not despair because another German tuner called MR CarDesign gives you the same 260hp but they do nothing terrible to the exterior! In fact they don’t do anything to the car’s body, only some lowering and new rims, and that’s about it! Instead they focus on performance.

MR CarDesign treatment for the engine includes a software upgrade for the Golf’s 2.0 liter TFSI engine’s ECU which costs 949 euros, with that alone you 260hp and 380 nm of torque, with 0 to 100 sprint time of 5.8 seconds, while you’ll be able to reach 263 km/h top speed.

They also install an electronic XDS system which they say ” is supposed to is supposed to improve the traction of the front wheel driven car “!! For proper stopping power, MR fits the car with an expensive Stoptech high performance brake system which costs about 3000 euros but comes with 355mm discs. There is also brake caliper air vent plug which goes for 99 euros!

MR’s Golf GTI uses KW-thread-sport suspension which costs 1529 euros and drops the car by 50mm at front and 40mm at rear. As for the wheels, they offer 19 inch Oxigin aluminum rims (just like JMS Scirocco) for 2000 euros. And the last item for your upgraded GTI is a sport exhaust package for 1600 euros.

When Abt released their first kit for the new Golf VI none of the die hard Golf fans liked it. You can check out their forums to see what they say about it! Now Abt has come up with a new treatment for the new Golf GTI, and.. well, it’s still no good!

Trouble is, Golf has always managed to be sporty and discrete. That’s why it is so popular and people don’t mind the extra pay for a Golf over its rivals. But this sort of ostentatious bodykits just ruin the car’s reputation! It’s kinda worse here with this GTI, just look at those wheels! They are ridiculous.

Anyway, Abt kit for Golf GTI mk6 includes new bumpers with LED lights and bigger air intakes in front and a diffuser along with a pair of twin diagonally arranged tailpipes at the back. You also get sport wheels and tires available in 18 and 19 inch size. As for the interior, Abt can tailor it to your desires, leather, carbon fiber, bucket seats, no boundaries here.

Abt Sportline also fiddles with the GTI’s engine. The king of hot hatches now can be had with even more power. Upon request, Abt can tune your car’s engine to 260hp and 360nm of torque for 1490 Euros, but if you pay 5300 Euros, you can get the double cheeseburger with 300hp. It can do 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. Abt also lowers the car by 30 mm and fits a sport braking package.

The idea behind this car is simple! A group of four young dudes aged between 19 and 22, who are actually apprentices at VW, have been given a Golf GTI and been told to go and modify it in the way street guys do and there are no holds barred! So they came up with this GTI Street, which to be honest is fantastic!

The first thing you think of when you are going to modify your car, if you are a dude, is to drop the suspension as much as possible! With the GTI Street they’ve gone a bit beyond that and installed a full set of hydraulics so you can adjust the ride height, low rider style!

The next most important items are of course huge wheels. So they managed to fit 19 inch black wheels covered with 225 tires under this poor Golf and also fitted it with bigger brakes from the R32. And it needs bigger brakes because what these guys have done to the engine is insane!

The regular Golf GTI with its 2.0 liter TFSI engine is considered as the king of hot hatches, but down there on the streets sometimes you have to take on much bigger competition so you better be prepared. That’s why the Golf Street packs a much bigger punch in form of 301 horsepower! That is quit a lot in a car the size of a shoe!

The car also features a very cool black and white theme inside and out which looks pretty nice indeed. This, I think is proper tuning done by guys who are the actual inventors of this business. It makes all of the jobs done by those big companies who have highly qualified engineers, suddenly look dull! The Golf GTI Street is on show currently at the Wörthersee meeting in Austria where VW also is showing their own modded Golf GTI and Polo GTI.

Two new variants of the VW Golf are now available to the market, the undisputed king of hot hatch backs Golf GTI which starts at 26,650 Euros and the economy minded Golf BiFuel from 21,150 Euros.

The 2009 Golf GTI features a 2.0 liter TFSI engine with 210 hp and 280 nm of torque, which might seem a bit weak in comparison to its rivals but there are good excuses for that. First of all, VW does not want the GTI rivaling its bigger brother the R32, and second fuel economy. The GTI with this engine will easily do 240 km/h while the average fuel consumption is 7.5 liter per 100 kilometers. If you really wanna enjoy this car you gotta have it with DSG transmission but it will cost you an extra 2125 Euros.

Golf BiFuel

Probably a clever way to make greener cars is the Bifuel solution. A normal petrol engine for times you wanna thrash it, and a gas powered one for the saving time. This Bifuel Golf costs 2500 Euros more than the petrol burning equivalent while offering less power, 98 hp, but the money you lose here will be back at the other end because this car has extremely low fuel costs. Fill up both gasoline and LPG tanks and you can cover more than 1100 miles non-stop! LPG also produces much less CO2 emissions .
