According to a German newspaper, Investors form Abu Dhabi, who recently acquired a major stake in Daimler, are in talks with German officials for a possible investment in the almost dead Opel. First exploratory discussions are done with Sheik Hamdan, a member of Abu Dhabi ruling family, and more to come while Abu Dhabi is reviewing the deal.

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)–The prime minister of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Juergen Ruettgers, is talking to a sheik from Abu Dhabi regarding a possible investment in General Motors Corp.’s (GM) struggling German unit Opel, German regional newspaper Westdeutsche Zeitung has reported.

The paper said the German premier had been talking to sheik Hamdan, a high-ranking member of the Emirate’s royal family, regarding such an investment, adding that 20 other companies in the state were also discussed as possible investment targets.

“First exploratory discussions” have taken place, the paper quotes a government spokesman as saying.

Abu Dhabi is yet to review the possibility, the paper said, adding that more talks between the two parties have been agreed.
