This is what a 2012 BMW M5 looks like after a 300 km/h (186 mph) crash. It is completely wrecked, but it didn’t kill the 60-year-old driver and his 20-year-old companion. The accident happened on the A81 derestricted Autobahn. The driver was traveling at nearly top speed when he lost control of the vehicle in an attempt to avoid collision with another car.

The M5’s passengers and their dog were rescued by the owner’s sons who were following the M5 in a BMW M3 and a BMW M6 (what a family). As you see in the pictures, they’ve used fire extinguisher on the M5, but it didn’t actually catch fire. Smoke was rising from the the top of the engine, and they just took precautions.

The M5 driver and passenger were both hospitalized due severe injuries, but they could have been killed if they were in a lesser car than the M5. So, kudos to BMW and its safety features.

Accidents are rare on the Autobahn, but when they do happen they give German authorities another excuse to try and impose a speed limit on this magical freeways.
