As promised in less than 24 hours since releasing the first teaser, Mercedes and AMG take the wraps off the new SLS Black Series and release official details and pictures of the car. As expected, it is big, it is loud, and it is very, very powerful.
And as with all Black Series Mercs the car is a bit toyish and ridiculous, what with all the holes in its body, and those winglets and spoilers, but that is what makes these cars so fun. They look toyish because they are toys; big, expensive toys, but toys nevertheless. You want a serious car go get a Lexus or something.
The most important part of the Black, of course, is the engine. We’ve all heard it going round the Nurburgring in various spy videos and we all marveled at its soundtrack, but we wanted to know how much power it makes. Well, it’s 622 horsepower, about 30 more than the SLS GT. Surprisingly, it makes less torque than the GT, at 635 Nm.
It is fast though. Zero to 100 km/h takes about 3.6 seconds and the top speed is 315 km/h. With the Black Series cars it is never about outright performance. The feel and the sensation of driving is what matters most.
The SLS Black should have a different, more awesome, handling than normal models thanks to its massive aerokit, wider track, revised suspension, and 20-inch wheels. It even has ceramic brakes and a lightweight titanium exhaust system weighing only 17 kg. The Black is in fact 70 kilo lighter than the GT.
The body kit consists of a front splitter, wide fenders, new air vents in the bumpers and in the wings, new side skirts, rear bumper incorporating more air vents and a racing diffuser, and a two-piece rear spoiler. All those bits are made of carbon fiber, which is also used to garnish the interior along with Alcantara and red stitching.
