MINI released the first details of the new generation of the Cooper ahead of the car’s official debut. The biggest change, apart from a new retro look, is the availability of a new generation of three and four-cylinder engines turbo engines. These are BMW-made turbo engines we’re talking about, which are the best kind.
MINI says the new powertrain not only offer a broader performance spectrum, but also set new standards in terms of output, performance, comfort and reliability. Not to mention they are also more fuel efficient.
To achieve those goals, all the new engines get a technology package, including turbocharging, direct fuel injection, variable camshaft control on the intake and outlet sides (dual VANOS) and, in the more powerful versions, fully variable valve control, VALVETRONIC.
There is a 1.5 litre three-cylinder engine with 134 hp and a very impressive 220 Nm of torque (230 with overboost), and a beefy 189 bhp four-cylinder unit with 280 Nm of torque (300 on overboost). So one thing’s for sure: the 2014 MINI Cooper will not be losing any of its peppiness. It will still be a hoot to drive thanks to the power of the new engines. Newly developed manual and automatic gearboxes will further contribute to the intense motoring pleasure that MINI has to offer, and will enhance the efficiency of the drive technology.
The chassis has undergone some changes too, and for the first time in MINI’s history you get Adaptive Dampers. They complement MINI’s traditional single-link spring strut axle at the front, and the multi-link rear axle suspension setup. But, you know, adaptive this and adaptive that rarely equal a more pleasurable drive. Just because you can have choices doesn’t mean you need them. The steering uses EPS (Electronic Power Steering) with torque steer compensation system, so don’t expect a full go-kart kind of feel from it.
2014 MINI Cooper will make its first official public appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
