Jay Leno’s EcoJet

EcoJet at Jay Leno’s EcoJet

Jay Leno is known for his passion and love for the automobile – his enormous garage offers a historic journey through the decades using rare and classic examples of the eras. Apart from hosting the Tonight Show, Leno also has his own show called Jay Leno’s Garage.

What sets this unique and stunning car aside from the rest of his garage isn’t the fact a gas turbine jet powers it – although this is a very unique aspect – it’s the fact Leno and General Motors created it together.

The EcoJet was once a just an exhibit, but thanks to Leno’s vision, it’s now a fully functioning machine. The car is designed to run on biodiesel fuel, using a gas turbine instead of a combustion/piston engine. This type of engine is can be found in helicopters and provides 650-bhp. Apart from this turbine engine, a classical drivetrain consisting of clutch and gearbox delivers the power to the rear wheels.

Although this machine gives off the smell of cooking French fries (no joke), the EcoJet is a highly technical bit of kit. The car has a fully featured PC with two LCD screens on the dash – one for the aero-style digital gauges and the other for the media and navigation controls. Two smaller LCD screens, also placed on the dash, provide rear views, as the car relied on cameras rather than any mirrors. Keeping up with and ahead of the times, all of the functions are controlled by Touchscreen or Speech recognition software.
