Every once in a while a particular make of car falls victim to spontaneous combustion, and the weird thing is, more often than not they are high-end sports and luxury models. Those Porsche GT3 fires are still burning in our memories.

This time the victim of self-combustion is a brand-new Maserati Quattroporte GTS which burned to the ground on the streets of Baku, Azerbaijan. Now, we say it was a fire, but given the state of it, the car appears to have been hit by an RPG or something. It is absolutely ruined.

The cause of the incident is yet to be announced, and the authorities have not yet ruled out the possibility of a deliberate attack on the car. But if turns out to be a mechanical failure, Maserati will have to look into the cause of it. If they’re lucky, it’ll be just this one case. But if other Quattroporte’s catch fire then they have a disaster on their hand.

If you own a new Maserati Quattroporte you don’t need to be apprehensive just yet. We will keep you posted if it turned out to a serious matter.
