Who knew that fitting a run of the mill sports coupe like the CLK with a big engine and give it flared arches would turn it into an absolute legend? That is, essentially, what happened with the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series. It is a true icon these days, worthy of a visit every now and again.
Of course, there is a lot more to the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series than just a big engine and flares wheel arches. The way AMG special ops operators set up its chassis and suspension and differential and electronics is what makes this car so sweet. That, and the fact that it is still a Mercedes at heart.
The fact that Jeremy Clarkson bought a CLK 63 Black and used at his personal car for years should tell you all you need you know about this car. Jezza loved that the Black can be cosseting and civilized when you are not in the mood for fun and games, and an absolute lunatic when you are. The car has a 507 horsepower 6.2 liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine and a heavy duty transmission/diff combo that gives it a unique and totally awesome handling. No other Black since the CLK 63 has managed to deliver quite the same feeling thrill and joy. It had everything a true petrolhead would want in a car, just the right amount.
