Volkswagen is bringing a new GTE Active concept to this year’s Detroit Motor Show, this time based on the production Tiguan crossover. The Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active showcases and efficient and clean plug-in hybrid version of the car with two electric motors and a gasoline engine.

Although it is hard to believe anything Volkswagen says these days, the hybrid system is the Tiguan GTE appears to be a top-notch one, boasting a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine with 148 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, supported by two electric motors including a 54 hp unit on the front and a 114 hp motor on the rear axle. That means a total system power of 221 hp.

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active also offers a variety of driving modes thanks to this system, a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. It can run in all-electric E-mode as a zero emissions vehicle with a range of 20 miles, or as a full hybrid in which case the range goes up to 580 miles. Other available modes include On road (Comfort or Eco); Offroad (Rocks, Sludge & Sand, or Gravel); Sport; Snow; Charge (battery is charged while driving); and Battery Hold (maintains a constant battery charge).

Other highlights of Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active which makes the idea of a production model more enticing include a rugged, off-road ready exterior design, all-terrain body kit, and sporty interior featuring Active Info Display, tablet-like infotainment, and touch slider controls.
