The Nissan DeltaWing Team is bringing their weird racing car out again, this time for American Le Mans Series, and the famous Petit Le Mans Race. They weren’t happy with the way things worked out at Le Mans 24 hours earlier this year, and wan to give the car another chance to prove that it’s far more than just a play thing. At Petit Le Mans they will see if the car can compete full time in American Le Mans Series from 2013.

The Nissan-powered jet-fighter like DeltaWing race car is an experimental car that entered 2012 Le Mans 24 hours with only one goal: to finish the race in once piece. The car did not classify in any of the categories and couldn’t win anything, but if it could finish then it would prove that there’s some method to its madness. Sadly, it couldn’t.

Now they are looking t next month’s American Le Mans Series (ALMS) finale at Road Atlanta, as a chance for the DeltaWing to redeem itself.

The car’s Le Mans drivers are not available for the American race, so instead Nissan’s original GT Academy champion, Spaniard Lucas Ordonez is set to race the car at Road Atlanta, along with American Le Mans Series 2011 PC class champion Gunnar Jeannette. Who knows, maybe they perform better Motoyama, Marino Franchitti and Michael Krumm.

The 1,000-mile, 10-hour Petit Le Mans race is not as demanding, or as exciting, as the French race, but it is still one helluva challenge for a team like DeltaWing.
