Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Officially Unveiled in Shanghai

Volkswagen took the wraps off its latest five-seat SUV concept at the Shanghai Auto Show. The CrossBlue Concept is the coolest among all the other SUV design studies VW has come up with in recent years, and the closest to a production car too. The car is powered by a hybrid system.

That is best thing about the CrossBlue. The hybrid powertrain consists of a turbocharged V6 engine and two electric motors – 40 kW front and 85 kW rear – connected to a six-speed DSG transmission. Together they make 415 PS (305 kW) while the torque figure is an impressive 700 Nm (516 lbs ft).

That power propels the CrossBlue, which is a pretty sizable car, from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and takes it all the way up to 146 mph. That is astonishing performance, considering that the car still manages 3.0 l/100 km, or 94.1 mpg. That means that thanks to its 80 liter tank, the CrossBlue has a range of 1,190 km (740 miles).

Size-wise, the Coupe measures 4,889 mm long, 2,015 mm wide and just 1,679 mm high. So despite the first speculations that it could be the new Tiguan, its proportions kind of suggest a BMW X6 rival. The car also has 1,101 litres of luggage (or 537 litres with all seats upright). The design is typical VW, neat and tidy with nothing particularly exciting to put your finger on. There are no current plans for the CrossBlue Coupe to enter production.
