Maserati realized they need a fancier name than Kubang for their new SUV if they want to become a player in this segment.
Revealed at this year’s IAA Motor Show, Maserati Kubang is a Jeep Cherokee underneath, but with Maserati design, cabin and engine. It is ought to rival cars like BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Vogue, and Mercedes ML.
Now reports from Italy suggest that Maserati is going to call the production version of the Kubang “Cinqueporte”, which sounds exotic, but simply means five-door. They used a similar naming policy for Quattroporte, and it worked, so why shouldn’t it work for the SUV. They’ve already registered the name in Italy.
The name Cinqueporte has been used once before for StudioTorino’s unique estate Quattroporte.
