This year’s legendary GTI Wörthersee meet in Austria gives SEAT, a Spanish subsidiary of Volkswagen, to shows off its latest race cars. There is the Leon Cup Racer, a customer race car and a preview of SEAT’s new touring car, and the new Ibiza SC Trophy.
Based on the five-door Leon, the Cup Racer is a serious bit of kit, powered by a two-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine with330 PS and maximum torque of 350 Nm. It uses a 6-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters, but sends its power to the front axle. To compensate, it boasts an electronically controlled differential lock. SEAT can also equip this car with a racing sequential gearbox with a proper shifter and a mechanical diff.
Visually, the Cup Racer features a full aero kit consisting of front spoiler, the smooth under body, the rear diffuser and the two-phase roof spoiler, which not only make a lot of downforce, they also channel the air in the most efficient way to help cooling the radiators and the brakes.
The race car has a 40mm wider track than the road-going version and features 18-inch racing wheels. The body is finished in metallic matte grey with orange accents. As for the price, it’s €70,000 with the electronic differential and DSG, and €95,000 for the one with the mechanical diff and sequential ‘box.
The SEAT Ibiza SC Trophy is a more affordable and more docile race car for enthusiasts, featuring a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with 200 PS, a seven-speed DSG operated from the steering wheel and a mechanical differential lock. The 2013-spec car is available from SEAT Sport starting at €31,500.
This should be the template for the 2014 WTCC cars.
