Nissan has big plans for the future of the GT-R sports car, and by the looks of things they are going to take it up a level and into the realm of proper supercars. Based on the latest insider news revealed by a Japanese magazine, the 2016 Nissan GT-R R36 is going to have 800 horsepower.

Now that’s a huge increase over the R35’s 600 hp (Nismo version), and the way they are going about doing this is by adding a hybrid system to the existing twin-turbo VR38DETT V6 engine. Nissan has already confirmed the next GT-R will come with hybrid power, but they had never hinted before at such massive power.

The hybrid system powering the 2016 Nissan GT-R will consist of a KERS module developed by F1 team Williams which feeds an electric motor. That motor works in tandem with the V6 unit to boost the output rather than making it more economical. But it will almost certainly offer a zero-emission electric mode, which will keep the Greenpeace happy.

With 800 horsepower at the tap, the new Nissan GT-R will rival the best of hyper cars in terms of performance, what with a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h. Those are very close to the Porsche 918’s records. The price of the car will also grow with its power output. The current Nismo GT-R costs 150 grand in the U.S., so expect the new car to run very close to 200K.
