In addition to its role as the official safety car for the 2015 Formula 1 season, Mercedes AMG GT is now going to serve as the official pace car for the German touring car championship known as DTM. Just like the F1 safety car, DTM’s AMG GT is a 510hp S model.

Replacing the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, which served in the DTM from 2012 to 2014, Mercedes AMG GT DTM Safety Car will pace the remainder of the touring car races across Europe with racing driver Jürgen Kastenholz behind the wheel. The GT’s first appearance will be at EuroSpeedway Lausitz at the end of May.

The reason the AMG GT is so suitable for safety car duty is because the car technical features are very close to that of a proper track car and therefore it will be more than capable to keep the racing machines in check if needs be. Some of these features include front mid-engine layout with transaxle, the V8 biturbo engine with dry sump lubrication, the dual clutch transmission and the sports suspension.

Mercedes AMG GT DTM Safety Car comes with a carbon fiber aero kit including a roof scoop and a lights bar, as well as the official safety car livery. It also gets six-point seat belts and sports bucket seats with the AMG emblem plus the necessary radio and camera equipment.
