Even though we had in the news that VW is going to discontinue the 1.4 TFSI engine, they’re introducing it in the Audi A1 for the British market. This 1.4 liter unit features a supercharger that is active from 1,500 rpm and also a turbocharger that kicks in from around 3,500 rpm. It’s dual-charged!
The result of this rather complex package combined with S tronic twin-clutch transmission is 185PS, 250Nm, 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, top speed 141mph, combined mpg 47.9, and CO2 emissions of 139g/km. That gearbox is particularity interesting, since it has seven gears and the seventh has a very tall ratio to reduce fuel consumption. But the whole car is a bit too complicated for a small hatchback. This sort of cars should be simple and fun, this car is too serious!
Audi A1 1.4 being a high performance model, it comes with a sophisticated suspension setup. McPherson strut front and torsion-beam rear suspension with separate springs and dampers and taut S line settings forms the basis for agile handling, giving keen turn in and impressive mid-corner stability and grip.
It also gets latest ESP stabilization program with electronic axle differential lock, which initiates very brief braking of the inside front wheel when its sensors detect an impending loss of traction during fast cornering.
The car also features the S-line specification as standard which means it comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and part leather-upholstered sports seats. This is in addition to the Sport equipment level which already includes remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, Driver’s Information System and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display.
