Australian motorsport firm Austech is developing a racing version of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe for International GT racing.

Based on the 2012MY of the Korean sports coupe, the Genesis coupe racer will be powered by a V8 engine, and can be utilized in multiple GT categories without major changes, including GT3, GTE and Grand Am GT.

The goal here is to provide privateers with an affordable race car that can easily be homologated to take part in different racing series with minimum work. To achieve that, the racing Geni coupe will use a common body shell in all its different versions. They will also share as many common components as possible.

This of course means compromise, but they’re negligible. For instance, the roll cage will be Grand Am spec. This will increase the overall weight slightly over a pure FIA spec but on the upside “it will provide a safer and more durable race car,” according to Austech.

The racing car will be powered by the V8 engine out of the Genesis sedan. The TAU 5 litre V8 is tricked out, of course, and depending on the class and category, it churns out between 450 bhp (Grand Am) and 550 bhp (GT3).  The engine will also be suited to Grand Am Prototype and LMP2 categories if required.

Testing will begin later this year, and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe race car will be ready for 2013 season.

Austech has not yet revealed the pricing of the car, but they promised to establish a spare parts and engineering support network in Europe and the United States, for customers’ peace of mind.
