Mercedes BIOME Concept

I’m sure your first reaction when you see this was WOW! And you will be even more amazed when you learn about its details. This ultra-futuristic car is called the Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept, and it’s an organic car which grows in a nursery rather than a factory and emits pure oxygen as you drive it along! Mercedes could make a bigger fuss about this.

The reason they didn’t is becasue the BIOME is way too futuristic for today’s world and most of the things about it are still at the theory level. It’s just an experiment by the designers from the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California for this year’s Los Angeles Design Challenge.

Nevertheless, it is an awesome concept and one can be sure some day we will be able to buy cars like this. I’m just not sure we would want to, given our prejudices of green cars! But the idea behind BIOME beggars belief.

It’s actually really easy to explain this car: ‘The Mercedes-Benz BIOME grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery. Out on the road the car emits pure oxygen, and at the end of its lifespan it can be simply composted or used as building material.’

The vehicle is made from an ultralight material called BioFibre and weighs round about 875.5 lbs (around 394 kg) which is nothing comparing to regular cars. BioFibre is grown from proprietary DNA in the Mercedes-Benz nursery, where it collects energy from the sun and stores it in a liquid chemical bond called BioNectar4534.

It is lighter than metal or plastic, yet more robust than steel.

The interior of the BIOME grows from the DNA in the Mercedes star on the front of the vehicle, while the exterior grows from the star on the rear. To accommodate specific customer requirements, the Mercedes star is genetically engineered in each case, and the vehicle “grows” when the genetic code is combined with the seed capsule. The wheels are grown from four separate seeds.

The car is also powered by BioNectar4534, which instead of a regular tank, is stored in the BioFibre material of the chassis, interior, and wheels. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has developed a technology to equip trees with special receptors which can collect the excess solar energy and turn it into BioNectar4534.

In other words the car acquires the energy it needs to work from the nature! And then it pays it dues by releasing pure oxygen just like a plant. And when you are done with it, it can be either fully composted or used as building material. It blends seamlessly into the ecosystem.

The level of technology and innovation in the BIOME is just mind-boggling. It’s just a vision of a super green future, but who knows, maybe it arrives sooner than you expect!

“As the inventor of the motor car, we wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future, which is created and functions in complete symbiosis with nature. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME is a natural technology hybrid, and forms part of our earth’s ecosystem. It grows and thrives like the leaves on a tree” according to Hubert Lee, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad.
