Mercedes GLS Set To Rival BMW X6

merc m class at Mercedes GLS Set To Rival BMW X6

Mercedes is joining the Coupe-Crossover game with a crossover version of the CLS, allegedly called the GLS Class.

Mercedes might have started the four-door coupe segment, but it was BMW that introduced that concept to the SUV world with the X6. After that a number of companies decided to have a go and create a coupe-like SUV, but none of them managed to to come up with something half as good as the X6.

The GLS though, it might be the car that beats the X6 in its own game! To be launched in 2014, Mercedes GLS will use the same underpinnings as the new generation M Class with a unibody chassis. It’ll be a four-seat crossover and while some of the practicality might be ruined, its CLS-inspired design will make up for that. And to be honest with cars of this type, looks is everything. BMW X6 is selling in thousands and no body seems to be complaining about rubbish headroom at the back or poor rear visibility.

The car will be available with a range of V6 and V8 engines, with the top model being an AMG-powered BiTurbo V8 that goes head to head with the BMW X6M.

Rumor has it that the next Range Rover Sport will also feature a coupe-like design. The X6 too will soon undergo a facelift. So, the battle of coupe-crossover giants should be interesting! Can’t wait for 2014.
