BMW’s Mercedes CLS-rivalling four-door coupe is finally ready to take the market by storm. Meet the new BMW Gran Coupe.

It took BMW a while to put together a four-door coupe and in that time Mercedes did make two generations of the CLS and Audi also came up with the very nice A7, but the 6-Series Gran Coupe is definitely a game-changer in this segment.

Complementing the 6er’s lineup of Convertible and Coupe, the Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (111 mm) longer than its 2-door coupe sibling and has two-extra doors, and it’s just as good-looking.

BMW has been generous with space in this car and those big 4+1 seats look crazy comfortable, but there’s no getting away from the fact that that curvy roof means headroom will be an issue for tall people in the back. It doesn’t matter though, it’s a coupe after all.

Those glorious looks are backed by a lineup of great engines including the twin-scroll turbo straight-six in the 640i developing (235 kW/320 hp), the variable sequential turbocharging and common-rail direct injection diesel in the 640d with (230 kW/313 hp) and the flagship BMW 650i Gran Coupe with new eight-cylinder engine (330 kW/450 hp) which is just fantastic.

All model variants fitted as standard with an eight-speed sports automatic transmission and Driving Experience Control switch; BMW EfficientDynamics measures unmatched in the segment – including Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode – come as standard with all engine variants.

Seeing as this is a BMW and should drive like one, it also gets Electric Power Steering and Dynamic Damper Control as standard; Integral Active Steering and Adaptive Drive are available as an option. Later in the summer 2012, the TwinPower Turbo V-8 powered 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the range.
