Audi S8 is a good alternative for the Mercedes S63 for those who want to experience a different kind of fast, executive saloon, something a bit more dignified and less shouty. Powered by the new 4.0-litre TFSI V8, the S8 delivers 520PS and 650 Nm of torque, and an astonishing 0 to 60mph sprint time of just 4.2 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

In spite of its frankly awesome performance, the S8 averages 28.0mpg on the combined cycle, equating to CO2 output of 235g/km. And it’s got quattro drivetrain combining a self-locking centre differential with the sport differential on the rear axle, and an 8-speed tiptronic transmission. Technically, this car is perfect, literally flawless.

As you’d expect from a fast, German saloon, it also excels at luxury. The lavishly equipped interior comes as standard with leather package, an Alcantara headlining, a DVD changer, the advanced key with a power-operated hands-free opening system and ambient lighting, as well as LED headlights and double glazing. Also standard is the MMI navigation plus infotainment system with an 8-inch display and WLAN connectivity.

The S8’s only weakness, probably,  is the exterior design – which is dignified and classy for sure, but lacks the soul and drama of a Merc S63, or a Jag XJ.
