Millen’s Genesis Coupe Sets New Pikes Peak Record

Professional drifter and stunt driver Rhys Millen takes his game to the next level by winning the 2012 Pikes Peak international hill climb event in Colorado, and setting a new record. But even more incredible than he and his Hyundai Genesis Coupe’s performance is the time difference between Millen and the second place driver Romain Dumas and his Porsche GT3 R. It’s less than two hundredths of a second.

Millen climbed the hill in  9m 46.164s, while Dumas did it in 9m 46.181s. The new record is a full 5 seconds faster than Nobuhiro ‘Monster’ Tajima’s. That said, Pikes Peak now is a fully paved road up the mountain, not like the olden days when most of it was dirt. And, Monster didn’t take part in this year’s belated event duo to some problems with his EV racer.

Still, Millen put up a great show with his specially-tuned 700-horsepower Genesis Coupe. This victory is a giant feather in the car’s cap and adds to its street cred as a high performance machine. Sure, the race-winning car was highly modified with a massive aero kit, racing suspension and slick tires, but the V6 engine in it is basically the same unit that powers the road-going versions.
