New BMW M3/M4 Engine Details: 415-hp I-6

BMW M4 Rendered 545x326 at New BMW M3/M4 Engine Details: 415 hp I 6

Someone took his time to decipher some BMW VIN documents, and arrived at interesting facts about the engine they are going to put in the next generation BMW M3 Sedan (F80) and M4 Coupe (F82). It is a 415-hp 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder unit.

It is a new iteration of the S55 turbocharged I-6 family, widely regarded as the best engine in BMW’s lineup. It makes pretty much the same amount of power as the E92’s V8 engine, but the torque figure will be considerably higher.

What’s more, the I-6 is lighter, and that makes the whole car lighter than the current version. They actually want it to weigh the same as the M3 E46 did, which means they have to shave nearly 200 kg off the E92. Talk about going back to basics.

So while the new M3/M4 won’t get any more power, the performance will be greater thanks to lower weight and increased agility. That, in combination with an M trick differential and M suspension, will result in a sweet handling car. We are drooling just writing about it!

We do hope they also get around making a pure performance-minded CSL version of the new car. It’s got all the right ingredients.
