Mercedes seemed to be in a hurry to unveil the 63 AMG version of the new S-Class and get on with it. The reason for that, probably, is because they have a number of other variants they need to be working on, and they have higher priorities than a hotted-up version. So this is the new 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG, and it is serious bit of kit.

There will be three versions of this car available, all powered by the 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 M157 AMG engine we all know and love. Instead of offering different outputs like AMG usually does, all S63 model get the same 585 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Instead, they are differentiating the models with the addition of 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system, and a long-wheelbase version for the right-hand-drive markets.

All versions of the new S63 weigh near as makes no difference two tons, and they all have limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time is 4.4 seconds in the rear-wheel-drive models, and 4.0 seconds dead in the 4MATIC. Likewise, while the first two can do 27.9 mpg, the 4MATIC can manage 27.4 mpg.

As is the case with AMG cars, you can alter the mood of driving by choosing between different settings provided to you by the transmission. They include “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode; “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes. These settings change parameters that control the suspension, throttle response, ESP, and the noise of the active sport exhaust system.

The car also benefits form the latest generation of Active Body Control, and weight-optimised, fade-resistant AMG high-performance composite brake system hidden behind the new 19-inch AMG wheels. The design of the car is restrained, with slight AMG touches here and there to remind you it is a special model. The interior is more successful, featuring dark-colored nappa leather and carbon fiber trimming.
