Daimler releases the official details of the 2014 Mercedes S500 Plug-In Hybrid a few weeks ahead of the car’s debut in Frankfurt. The S500 Hybrid, to all intents and purposes, is as good as cars currently get. Satisfying performance; excellent luxury; superb quality; and amazing fuel economy. This car has them all.

It really is hard to believe that such a large car needs only 3 liters of fuel per 100 km. That is well over 70 mpg. The reason for this is a sophisticated hybrid powertarin, consisting of a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 engine developing 245 kW (330 hp) and 480 Nm of torque, and an electric motor adding 80 kW (107 hp) and 380 Nm of torque.

So you got more than enough power to enjoy a relaxed and effortless drive. The S500 hybrid goes form 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h. That is the same as a V8-powered model. The electric motor also enables the car to drive solely on electricity for up to 30 km. And as for the CO2 emissions, it’s 69 g/km.

Mercedes S500 plugin-hybrid also benefits from an intelligent energy management system with optimal use of recuperation during deceleration, four hybrid operating modes – HYBRID, E?MODE, E-SAVE and CHARGE. There is also a clever haptic throttle pedal that provides feedback about the activation of the combustion engine and helps in metering the power output.

The rest of the car is what you’d expect from a normal S500. It is ultra luxurious and features the latest safety and convenience equipment. Mercedes is yet to confirm the price of the S500 hybrid, and it certainly won’t be cheap. But then it is a no-compromise hybrid car.
