We were expecting much more pomp and circumstance, but BMW decided to quietly unveil the new 4 Series Convertible over the weekend. There will be a public debut ceremony at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month, but for now let’s checks out the car’ specs.

The new BMW 4 Series Convertible, just like the previous E93 series, features a 3-piece folding hardtop that hide away in the boot at the touch of a button. Things we would like BMW to address in this new model includes the size of the boot with the roof in it, which was pathetic before, and the quality of the roof mechanism and its rubber seals, which used to become awfully noisy after a while in the E93.

In terms of styling and technicalities, the BMW 4 Series Convertible shares many things with the coupe version and the F30 sedan. The car will launch in America with three engines, including the magnificent 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the 428i model, developing 245 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. It’ll enable this four-seater convertible to go from 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds while returning up to 34 mpg. You can get either a six-speed manual, or the renowned 8-speed ZF automatic. The 428i Convertible will be offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive or with optional xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system, while the 435i Convertible will be available at launch with rear wheel drive.

Power-obsessed users should choose the 435i model, as it comes with BMW’s N55 straight-six engine. A classic BMW I6 boosted with turbocharger, the N55 is one helluva motor capable of producing 306 hp and 400 Nm (300 lb-ft) of torque. Zero to 60 in this takes only 5.5 seconds, and yet it does nearly 32 mpg.

There is also a diesel variant for Europe, the 420d, with a 184 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque 2.0 liter unit. IT is not awfully slow with a 0 to 60 time of 8.4 seconds, and it returns an impressive 46 mpg. But a sporty convertible like this cannot be had with a diesel engine. It just doesn’t sound right.

Going on sale in early 2014, the 2014 BMW 428i Convertible will have a base MSRP of $49,675, and the 2014 BMW 435i Convertible will have a starting price of $55,825. Both prices include $925 destination and handling.
