The name Saleen is associated mostly with high-powered Mustangs and the S7 super car. Now, and in a major leap forward, the American tuner and car maker announced a new project to launch an exclusive electric vehicle based on the Tesla Model S.

According to the company, Saleen Tesla Model S will be more than a mere tuning package for the electric sedan. It will feature Saleen’s own design, according to Steve Saleen, who is apparently hell-bent on launching “one of the most compelling Tesla’s to ever hit the roadway.”

Saleen has made a couple of brilliant Mustangs over the years, and they are experts at extracting crazy amount of horsepower out of V8 engines. But they’ve never worked on an EV before. And as for the design, it’s a giant leap from making a plastic body kit for a Mustang to alter the looks of the Model S, which is THE best-looking four-door sedan out there. How are they going to improve it?

Still, Steve Saleen sounds quite enthusiastic about the whole thing: “Tesla’s values are not a departure from our core values of elite power, style, and performance. I have admired their craftsmanship. And now with our upcoming entry into the electric car market with a revolutionary design all our own, we share a desire to also produce vehicles that are not dependent on fossil fuels and which accomplish this fuel independence with a tremendous assemblage of grace and technology.”
