Following the launch of the DS 5LS in China, Citroen decided to step up its game and came up with a hotted-up R version. To be unveiled in concept form at this year’s Beijing Auto Show in about two weeks, Citroen DS 5LS R features a 1.6 liter turbo engine which makes a staggering 300bhp and 400Nm of torque.

That is a huge amount of power for a 1.6 engine, and it immediately makes you think of massive turbo lag. Citroen begs to differ, saying this is pretty much the same engine used in the World Rally Championship. Here that engine powers a chunky saloon.

To increase the DS 5LS R’s sporty appeal, Citroen has widened the fort tracks, lowered the ride height by 15m, and fitted a sequential gearbox in it with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

What’s more, the chassis and suspension setups have been revised, and the exterior modified with carbon fiber inserts, special DS grille, 20-inch wheels, a Carmine Red paint job, side stripes, and lots of R emblems.

The cabin is garnished with lots of leather and Alcantara, and features watchstrap upholstery. The seats, dashboard, upper door panels and central armrest are finished with pearl top-stitching in Carmine Red. You will also find real carbon fiber inserts on the steering wheel, door panels and door handles, together with Carmine Red touches for the air vents.

Citroen has not yet announced any plans for a production version of the DS 5LS R.
