“About time to unveil the D and something else,” is what Tesla’s founder and CEO Elon Musk tweeted last night, causing quite a stir in the auto world. This mysterious Tesla D is either a new model or an upgraded version of the current Model S.

Given Musk’s recent interviews and the rumors circulating in the blogosphere about the next big thing from Tesla, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Musk pulls an autonomous version of the Model S from his magic hat. That said, Tesla D would be a rather unimaginative name for such a thing.

Some say the ‘D’ is actually the entry-level EV Tesla has been talking about for a while. Last we heard from that car, it was supposed to be called Model 3. Whatever the name, the car would be much more affordable than the Model S, which classify in the luxury segment, and a lot less glamorous.

As for that “something else” nobody has any worthwhile idea what that might be. Who knows, maybe Musk’s Mars-bound spaceship is ready ahead of schedule!

We shall find out all about it on October 9 when Musk will be hosting another one of his elaborate Steve Jobs-style press conferences.
