After introducing the concept of hot hatchback to the Americans with the GTI, Volkswagen is now trying to impress upon them the joys of having a high-performance wagon with this, the Golf R Estate unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Packing a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine with 300 PS and maximum torque of 380 Nm, VW Golf R Estate is a capable and versatile family car that is also good at fun and games. The car comes with 20mm lowered suspension, but it also has a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. So it’s a mix of practicality with sportiness. And a good one at that.
Boasting a stylish and sporty body kit, DCC adaptive chassis control, and a set of 19-inch wheels, the Estate R accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and isn’t too shabby at taking corners either. Meanwhile thanks to a 605 litres boot, expandable to 1,620 litres, you can also use hauling stuff around, or take your dog to a track day and make it really sick!
The styling highlights of Golf R Estate include R design bumper, a high-gloss black diffuser, four chrome-plated tailpipe trims, so-called ‘aero flaps’ on the D-pillars, cherry-red taillights and LED number plate illumination on the outside, and Alcantara upholstery, R logos on the seats and steering wheel on the inside.
