In spite what we’ve been hearing this past few years about Mercedes trying to pull the plug on the G-Wagen, the iconic SUV is now stronger than ever, boasting a rich lineup with many different variants. This is the latest version of the normal body style, the 2016 Mercedes G-Class which comes in four variants including G350d and G500 as well as G63 and G65 AMG.

The basic 2016 Mercedes G-Class G350d is powered by a V6 diesel engine which in its new version pumps out 245 hp and 600 Nm of torque. But it is not likely to be very popular, as the new G500 now features a twin-turbo V8 unit out of the G500 4×4² with 422 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. Both models are equipped as standard with an ECO start/stop.

As for the 2016 Mercedes G63 and G65 AMG, these guys continue virtually unchanged and only enjoy a slight power increase. The former, G63, now delivers 571 hp and 760 Nm, while the latter, G65, gives you access to 630 hp with torque of 1000 Nm. The adaptive damping system with Sport and Comfort mode is now available for the G500 as well.

Styling-wise, you would be hard-pressed to find any difference at all between the 2016 Mercedes G-Class and the previous model on the outside. Inside the cabin though, you find new color combinations as well as new multifunction display and redesigned pointers and dials. The two AMG models also sport a redesigned instrument cluster.

And if you happen to stumble upon the AMG EDITION 463 special model (only G63 and G65 models), you will be glad to see it comes with AMG sport stripes along the sides, a protective-strip insert in black aluminium, and exclusive 21-inch wheels, plus two-tone instrument panel, two-tone seats in high-quality designo leather with side bolsters in carbon-look leather and contrasting topstitching, seat and door centre panels in a diamond design, carbon-fibre trim and door pulls in nappa leather.
